Its role is fundamental to the Dominican economy, as tourism represents one of the main sources of income and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origin of the Ministry of Tourism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The history of tourism in <a href=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/estilo\/turismo\/republica-dominicana\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/estilo\/turismo\/republica-dominicana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominican Republic<\/a> formally begins in <strong>1931<\/strong>, with the enactment of <strong>Law No. 103<\/strong>, which regulated the use of automobiles for tourists. However, it was in <strong>1934<\/strong> when a system of direction and organization of tourism was implemented under the <strong>Secretariat of State of Communications and Public Works<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subsequently, the administration of the sector went through different government agencies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1937:<\/strong> Transfer to the Secretariat of State for Commerce, Industry, and Labor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1948:<\/strong> The General Directorate of Tourism is transferred to the Secretariat of State for National Economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1956:<\/strong> Assigned to the Secretariat of State for the Interior, and then in that same year to the Secretariat of State for Industry and Commerce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1962:<\/strong> The General Directorate of Tourism is transferred to the Industrial Development Corporation of the Dominican Republic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1969:<\/strong> The <strong>National Directorate of Tourism<\/strong> is created, dependent on the Executive Branch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1979:<\/strong> With <strong>Law No. 84<\/strong>, the National Directorate of Tourism is elevated to <strong>Secretariat of State for Tourism<\/strong>, granting it greater autonomy and resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2010:<\/strong> With <strong>Decree 56-10<\/strong>, the Secretariat of State for Tourism is transformed into the current <strong>Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic (MITUR)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regulation and Tourism Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MITUR is responsible for establishing standards and regulations for the country&#8217;s tourism industry. In <strong>1984<\/strong>, various regulations were implemented to classify and regulate tourism services, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hotel establishments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restaurants and travel agencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Land tourist transport and vehicle rental.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tour guides and gift shops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>2001<\/strong>, with <strong>Law No. 158-01<\/strong>, the <strong>Official Tourism Promotion Fund<\/strong> and the <strong>Tourism Development Council (CONFOTUR)<\/strong> were established to encourage development in areas with little growth and locations with high tourism potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Structure of the Ministry of Tourism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MITUR is organized into different vice ministries that manage its various areas of competence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Administrative Vice Ministry<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technical Vice Ministry<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vice Ministry of International Cooperation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vice Ministry of Destination Management<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vice Ministry of Development<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vice Ministry of Quality of Tourism Services<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MITUR Dependencies<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Consejo de Fomento Tur\u00edstico (CONFOTUR)<\/strong>: Fosters development in new tourist destinations and areas with little development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comit\u00e9 Ejecutor de Infraestructuras de Zonas Tur\u00edsticas (CEIZTUR)<\/strong>: Plans and executes infrastructure projects in tourist areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tourism Promotion Offices<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure tourism promotion, MITUR has an extensive network of offices throughout the country and abroad. In the Dominican Republic, the offices are located in strategic cities such as <strong>Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Saman\u00e1, Barahona, La Romana<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the international level, the Ministry of Tourism maintains a presence in key countries such as <strong>United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and Brazil<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Importance of the Ministry of Tourism in the Dominican Economy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/david-collado-ministro-de-turismo-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"David Collado, ministro de Turismo desde agosto del 2020.\" class=\"wp-image-446819\" style=\"width:365px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Collado, ministro de Turismo desde agosto del 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MITUR plays a crucial role in the economic growth of the Dominican Republic, as tourism generates thousands of direct and indirect jobs and contributes significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
