Geneva.-<\/strong> United States and China<\/strong> concluded this Sunday two days of intense negotiations on tariffs, which have gone far beyond the expectations that had been publicly raised, as both sides stated that the talks were “in-depth”<\/strong> and the progress “substantial.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither Beijing nor Washington<\/strong> immediately offered details of what was resolved, nor did they give figures for the eventual tariff reductions agreed upon, but they indicated that these details would be known this Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the US protectionist onslaught with the so-called “reciprocal tariffs” that affected dozens of countries, the trade battle focused on a direct confrontation between the US and China, which today have cross tariffs of 145% for Chinese products (with the exception of some electronic products) and 125% for American products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such a level of customs duties practically represents a kind of trade embargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the negotiating teams expressed great caution before traveling to Geneva, pointing out that it was a first contact to lay the groundwork for subsequent negotiations, President Donald Trump raised the stakes by assuring that the first day of meetings had gone “very well” and that a “total reset” of relations was being negotiated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first to confirm that the conversations had been positive was Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who spoke of “substantial progress” and emphasized the spirit of “cooperation, shared interests, and mutual respect” that prevailed during the meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Chinese side, the comments came a few hours later in Geneva and from the vice premier He Linfeng, who spoke of deep and constructive contacts, and of an agreement to establish an economic-trade consultation mechanism to solve issues that concern both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that economic relations between his country and the United States, and trade ties, can be mutually beneficial, and said that there is a willingness to expand areas of cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, who co-led the U.S. delegation, maintained that the agreement reached with China can be relied upon to help his country resolve the “massive” trade deficit, which the Trump administration has put at $1.2 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s important to understand how quickly we’ve been able to reach agreements, which reflects that the differences perhaps weren’t as great as we thought,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Trade Organization (WTO) reacted by stating that these discussions represent “a significant step forward”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This progress is important not only for the United States and China, but for the rest of the world, including the most vulnerable economies,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
