Geneva.-<\/strong> At least 47 people were injured by gunfire during an attack on Palestinian civilians at a humanitarian aid distribution center in Gaza<\/a>, confirmed this Wednesday the head of the United Nations Office <\/a>for Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, Ajith Sunghay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shots were apparently fired by Israeli army forces, and according to the Gazan government at least three people died, although Sunghay, citing sources in the Strip with direct contact with his office, could not confirm this last point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read more: UN warns of “record hunger” in Haiti<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n“What we saw on Tuesday is a very clear example of the danger of distributing food under the circumstances in which the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) is doing it,” he indicated at a press conference, referring to that American organization, which has Israeli support.\n\n\n

“It was the first day that mechanism was functioning, which for various reasons is not the most viable solution for distributing humanitarian aid in Gaza,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\nSunghay explained that a large part of the Gaza population cannot access the GHF distribution area, in the southern end of the Strip, where the events of Tuesday occurred.\n\n\n

The United Nations, which has repeatedly condemned Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza for nearly three months, has refused to collaborate with GHF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creation of GHF, comprised of former U.S. military personnel, security companies, and humanitarian operators, was announced in May by the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n\n\nThe United Nations has warned about its lack of neutrality, the risk of forced displacement, and the inadequacy of the aid delivered, amid a serious humanitarian crisis and restrictions on access to essential supplies.\n\n\n

However, this Sunday the director of the organization, Jake Wood – a former U.S. military and founder of the private company specializing in disaster response, Team Rubicon – resigned, warning in a statement distributed to several media outlets that the group cannot adhere “to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, and independence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the resignation of Jake Wood, The Washington Post reported that John Acree, a former official at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and until recently the head of the GHF mission in Gaza, has been appointed as interim executive director.
