But what is this disease and how does it affect humans?\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>New World screwworm<\/strong> (<em>Cochliomyia hominivorax<\/em>), also known as <strong>screwworm fly larva<\/strong> or <strong>screwworm<\/strong>, is a <strong>parasitic larva<\/strong> that can <strong>affect humans<\/strong>, although its main target is warm-blooded animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we talk about myiasis, we are referring to a <strong>parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae<\/strong> that feed on living or dead tissue of mammals, including humans. In that sense, <strong>myiasis caused by the New World screwworm<\/strong> is usually a disease of livestock, but it can also affect humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/spanish\/index.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/spanish\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>, report that New World screwworm infestation is a type of myiasis that <strong>occurs when the larvae of screwworm flies infest the living flesh of warm-blooded animals<\/strong>, most commonly livestock and less commonly birds, pets, and people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>screwworm<\/strong> occurs in <strong>people with open wounds<\/strong>; it can also occur in other body cavities with mucous membranes (e.g., the nostrils).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name <strong>screwworm<\/strong> refers to the <strong>feeding behavior of the larvae<\/strong>, which bore or perforate healthy tissues. The larvae of the New World screwworm cause great damage by opening the host&#8217;s tissue with their sharp mouth hooks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New World <strong>screwworm<\/strong> is endemic to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including countries in <strong>South America, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>People at higher risk include:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those who live in rural areas in regions or countries where the New World screwworm is endemic and where livestock is raised.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People who frequently work with livestock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anyone with open sores or wounds, including from a recent operation, as flies lay eggs in open sores.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vulnerable populations, including immunocompromised individuals, those at the extremes of age, and malnourished individuals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symptoms in humans<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Intense pain and sensation of movement in the wound<\/strong><\/li><li>Foul-smelling discharge<\/li><li>Swelling and redness<\/li><li>Fever (in advanced cases or with secondary infection)<\/li><li>Visibility of larvae in the wound<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GHDRKLRPGVGS7MKP4LNBX4TDT4-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-481806\" style=\"width:456px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How it spreads<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New World screwworm infestations begin when a female fly lays eggs in a wound or other opening on a live warm-blooded animal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You may be interested in: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/internacionales\/casos-miasis-gusano-barrenador\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/internacionales\/casos-miasis-gusano-barrenador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico confirms six cases of myiasis by screwworm in humans<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smell of a wound or an opening such as the nose or eyes, the umbilical cord of a newborn animal, or the genitals attracts female flies. Wounds as small as tick bites could attract a female fly to feed. A female can lay between 200 and 300 eggs at a time and could lay up to 3000 eggs during her lifespan of between 10 and 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThe only way to treat New World screwworm infestation is to <strong>physically extract the larvae from the infested tissue.<\/strong> All suspected New World screwworm larvae must be collected and placed in a leak-proof container with 70% ethanol.\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The volume should be sufficient to completely submerge the larvae, which will kill and preserve them for confirmatory diagnostic testing. If 70% ethanol (or more potent) is not available, 70% isopropanol (or more potent) or 5 to 10% formalin are acceptable alternatives, although they are not the preferred ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also treated with <strong>antibiotics<\/strong> to prevent or treat bacterial infections and in some cases, antiparasitic drugs (such as ivermectin) are used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health of Mexico confirmed this Tuesday six cases of myiasis caused by screwworm in humans.
