Moscow.- <\/strong>Contrary to what it may seem, a large majority of Russians want the president, Vladimir Putin<\/a>, to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, although they do not renounce the territorial gains obtained in the last three and a half years, sociologist Oleg Zhurabliov told EFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“How many Russians support the end of the war today? Over 70%, the majority of society,” said the specialist from the Laboratory of Public Sociology and currently a professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa.<\/p>\n\n\nHowever, it admits that many Russians are unaware of what is at stake in the peace negotiations with Ukraine that began in mid-May in Istanbul.\n\n\n

Weariness with the war<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nZhurabliov admits that Russian society is not monolithic, but he is convinced that only 10% of its members support what is known as the ‘special military operation’, while another 10% are categorically against it. The rest, more than two-thirds, yearn for peace.\n\n\n

The weariness with the war is indisputable, but it is also true that “the majority of Russians still haven’t understood the meaning and objectives of this war,” he points out.<\/p>\n\n\nThe reasons may be economic, social, or psychological – supporting peace is no longer frowned upon – but Western sanctions and more circumstantial factors such as the arrival in power last January of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who “boosted the desire for peace to arrive as soon as possible”, also influence.\n\n\n

The Russians don’t set targets, as they are unaware of the scope of the Ukrainian capitulation or surrender that hawks and ultranationalists talk about so often as the end point of the fighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People advocate for peace negotiations, but some of them want those talks to be held under advantageous conditions for Russia,” he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A victorious peace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where many of the respondents agree is that Russia cannot lose this war. What does that mean? It’s a question still unanswered, although the Kremlin is clear on the minimum agreement: annexation of four regions, Ukrainian neutrality, and a halt to NATO expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Most people want peace to come as soon as possible, some at any price; others, under conditions acceptable to Russia. Many do not understand what those conditions are. The important thing is that they are ‘good for Russia’,” he explains.<\/p>\n\n\nAs of today, Russians support not so much the military campaign or Putin, but rather the “socio-economic changes” that it has brought about, which includes not only the increase in salaries, but also the growth of industry and the substitution of foreign imports with national products.\n\n\n

“That’s the paradox. People can be loyal to Putin, because they see him as the politician of normality within the framework of an abnormal war. Despite the war, salaries are increasing and people have become more patriotic, but not from a military point of view, but a soft patriotism,” he points out.<\/p>\n\n\nIt refers, mainly, to those who have benefited from the war or rather from the “Keynesian militarist” policy, in allusion to the famous economic doctrine.\n\n\n

It is the new social class that has been born with the war – the Russians linked to the military industry – and that does not want to give up its profits, despite the cost it has had in human lives, which independent sources put at one million casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dilemma between the past and the future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dilemma between war and peace can also be extrapolated to the antagonism between those who want to return to the state of affairs in the pre-war period, before February 24, 2022, and those who want to start from scratch in the post-war period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be that as it may, in Zhurabliov’s opinion, the changes that have taken place in Russia in the last 40 months are, “without a doubt, irreversible”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Russia has changed a lot (…) Despite the unpopularity of the war, many see it simply as something bad that happened to Russia, an experience that has led to the formation of a new patriotism,” he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, for example, families not especially patriotic volunteer in the manufacture of camouflage nets for soldiers fighting in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sociologist has also detected the emergence of Russians who have switched to the opposition to the Kremlin after suffering the negative economic impact and not the positive one of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
