Krakow (Poland), June 1 (EFE).- A technical tie in the polls for the presidential elections in Poland, which give a minimal advantage to the nationalist and ultraconservative candidate Karol Nawrocki over the liberal and pro-European Rafal Trzaskowski, left the country in suspense this Sunday about the course it will take: in favor of the reformist agenda of Donald Tusk’s government or veto it from the powerful head of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two exit polls conducted after the second round of the presidential elections gave Trzaskowski, the current mayor of Warsaw, a slight advantage of between 50.17% and 50.3% over Nawrocki (49.7% – 49.83%), a historian supported by the ultra-conservative Law and Justice party (PiS), immediately after the polling stations closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, two hours later, the ultraconservative had overtaken Trzaskowski with 50.7% against 49.3% of the votes, according to Ipsos.<\/p>\n\n\nIn such a close election, voter mobilization was key, something that both candidates achieved by registering a turnout of over 71%.\n\nEven so, until the National Electoral Commission publishes the preliminary data on Monday, it will not be known who will be the successor of the ultraconservative Andrzej Duda, backed by the PiS, starting next August, and who has not hesitated to veto the liberal reforms of the coalition led by Tusk, who supports Trzaskowski.\n\n\n
In this way, both candidates were declared winners of the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n“I will be the president of all Poles, I will be your president,” Trzaskowski assured.\n\n\n
Aware of the uncertainty that still hangs over the result, the mayor of Warsaw, who lost in 2020 precisely against Duda by a 2% difference in the votes, pointed out that he won, “although it will be by a hair’s breadth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For his part, Nawrocki was equally hopeful, and stated that “we will win and save Poland”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The nationalist assured that the final count will prove him right and will end “the government of Donald Tusk and its monopoly of evil power (…) that snatches away our great dreams and aspirations”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nawrocki is betting on an overwhelming victory in the Polish villages, where he has his strongholds and where the count is slower than in the cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In large cities, Trzaskowski is the clear winner, according to the polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president of the National Electoral Commission, Sylwester Marcianik, pointed out that right now he doesn’t see any risk of there having to be a recount of the final result given the difference of only 120,000 votes between one candidate and another, unless complaints are registered in the next 14 days and a court so decides.<\/p>\n\n\nThe final outcome will have profound implications for the Polish political landscape.\n\n\n
If Trzaskowski, 53, wins, being a central figure in Tusk’s governing coalition, it is foreseeable that he will work in harmony with the Executive and facilitate the implementation of its reformist agenda.<\/p>\n\n\nThe current mayor of Warsaw has promised to push for reforms such as the liberalization of abortion, civil unions, and reversing the judicial reforms of PiS, in addition to seeking a closer relationship with Brussels.\n\n\n
Conversely, a victory for Nawrocki, supported by PiS, which is the main opposition force, would mean a presidential power willing to use the veto to prevent an effective government management by Tusk and a possible stagnation of his agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Polish president has the right to legislative veto, can send laws to the Constitutional Tribunal, whose members were appointed mostly by parliaments dominated by the PiS, is commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and must approve all important appointments, such as ambassadors.<\/p>\n\n\nNawrocki, 42, and a newcomer to politics with a Eurosceptic profile, has adopted tougher positions on issues such as immigration, affinity with the Donald Trump government, from which he received support, and has shown reluctance towards the integration of Ukraine into NATO.\n\n\n
Your choice could generate a period of conflictive cohabitation similar to the one the Tusk Government has been experiencing since 2023 with Duda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The polls thus reflect the existence of “two Polands”, one tending towards the pro-European and liberal side, and another ultra-conservative, which, divided into two different powers of the State, are difficult to reconcile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
