Santo Domingo.\u2013 <\/strong>The proposal to grant temporary work permits to Haitian citizens in an irregular situation, supported by figures such as former President Hip\u00f3lito Mej\u00eda, has generated various reactions among the population. In a tour conducted by De \u00daltimo Minuto, the majority of those consulted agreed that, although migration<\/a> must be regulated<\/strong>, it is necessary to recognize the labor reality of the country and the role played by Haitian workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaitians are the ones who do the work that many Dominicans don’t want to do. If they leave, the bush and weeds will return everywhere,\u201d said Rub\u00e9n Santana, while pointing out that many Dominicans reject hard jobs<\/strong> such as construction or yard work. \u201cDominicans want money, but they don’t want to sweat. Who built those buildings you see there? Haitians,\u201d he said firmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the same lines, Mercedes, another interviewee, was clear in stating that \u201cwe Dominicans are lazy for certain jobs. They come and solve, they work hard. If we were in their place, we would also want an opportunity.\u201d For her, allowing them to work legally is a fair and safer way to handle the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Luis P\u00e9rez, a construction worker, stated that \u201cmigration is not bad if it is regulated. In other countries, one also works with permits. It should be the same here.\u201d He believes that regularizing the Haitians who are already employed would help to have more control and prevent them from constantly fleeing from the immigration authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some citizens warn about possible long-term consequences<\/strong> and the need to reinforce border surveillance, the majority acknowledges that the labor sector, especially in areas such as construction, agriculture, and services, largely depends on Haitian labor. \u201cHere, a real solution must be sought. You can’t hide the sun with a finger,\u201d Santana concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
