Santo Domingo.- The average cost of the family basket nationwide increased by RD$39.59 pesos in the month of May, compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n
With that slight increase, the average national family basket is RD$46,768 pesos, with the basic baskets of the highest income groups having the smallest increase.<\/p>\n
The baskets of quintiles 4 and 5 (those of the higher income groups) had a smaller increase than those of quintiles 1, 2 and 3.<\/p>\n
The baskets of quintiles 1, 2, and 3 registered increases of 0.15%, 0.14%, and 0.125% respectively, driven mainly by increases in the prices of various goods and services, restaurants, hotels, health, and transportation.<\/p>\n
In that month, tradable goods registered a reduction of 0.16%, mainly explained by the reduction in the prices of tourist packages, automobiles, and some foods such as bananas, plantains, and potatoes.<\/p>\n
However, non-tradable goods and services recorded a monthly inflation of 0.33%, driven by the increase in prices in prepared food outside the home, university education, personal care services, housing rent and motoconcho and bus fares from drivers’ associations.<\/p>\n
When comparing it year-on-year, inflation was higher in non-tradable goods (4.53%) compared to tradable goods (3.14%), reflecting greater price pressure in local services not exposed to international trade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
