Santo Domingo.\u2013<\/strong> The lawyer and provincial coordinator of Human Rights in San Crist\u00f3bal, Carlos S\u00e1nchez, asked this Wednesday the Dominican authorities and the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) to clarify the circumstances in which the young American citizen Ezri Hajiune died, who was detained in the Haina Detention Center for deportation purposes.<\/p>\n\n\nS\u00e1nchez, with more than 20 years of experience as an activist, explained that his involvement in the case began after receiving complaints about several people, mostly Haitians, held for more than two months in the immigration center. It was then that they shared a photograph of a young woman, apparently with mental health problems, locked up in deplorable conditions inside the vacation center, playing with water coming out of the toilet.\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we saw that video, we decided to act and file a habeas corpus. Two hearings had already taken place and the judge had ordered a medical and psychiatric evaluation,\u201d<\/strong> denounced S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n\n\nThe lawyer expressed his concern about the versions that have circulated about the conditions in which the young woman was found, who, as he explained, was locked up with dozens of men, without access to minimum hygiene or shelter, despite showing evident signs of mental disorder.\n\n\n

\u201cIf it wasn’t a direct crime, it was a crime of omission. The Dominican State is responsible for not guaranteeing their physical and mental integrity,\u201d<\/strong> he declared.<\/p>\n\n\nS\u00e1nchez also questioned the lack of clarity surrounding the young person’s identity. He indicated that initially neither her nationality nor her sex was known with precision, as the young person presented ambiguous features.\n\n\n

“There was talk that she was transexual or hermaphrodite, but the truth is that biologically she had developed the female sex, and her identity was later confirmed as American, not Ukrainian, as had been initially said. Her name was Ezri, and she was between 18 and 22 years old,”<\/strong> he explained.<\/p>\n\n\nAccording to the General Directorate of Migration, Ezri Hajiune was detained on April 22nd after being found wandering on a beach in the East, without identification documents and with a compromised mental health condition. Subsequently, her identity was confirmed through facial recognition technology, and protocols for her deportation were activated.\n\nThe institution stated that the young woman received medical attention during her detention, and that on June 23, while preparing for a routine medical check-up, she was found without vital signs. They indicated that the body showed no signs of violence, but is under autopsy to determine the causes of death.\n\n\n
