Saint John\u2019s,.<\/strong> \u2013 The Donald Trump Administration<\/strong> shook the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS)<\/strong> this Thursday by threatening to leave the organization, alleging its “inability” to address the crises in Venezuela and Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\nThis was stated by the number two of American diplomacy, Christopher Landau, who participated in the forum held in Antigua and Barbuda with a harsh speech on behalf of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.\n\n\n

Questions the future of the OAS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nBefore the chancellors and representatives of the member states, Landau warned that the State Department is evaluating, by order of Trump himself, the permanence of the United States in various international organizations, including the OAS.\n\n“To be honest, and I am an honest person, I am not sure how this review will end,” warned the Undersecretary of State.\n\nLandau harshly criticized the OAS for not having done “anything substantial” in the face of what he called a “blatant electoral fraud” committed by Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, who assumed a new term despite the opposition’s allegations of electoral fraud.\n\nThe divisions between the countries of the continent made it difficult to adopt a common position on Venezuela in the OAS. Finally, a resolution was approved that requested the presentation of the voting records, something that was never fulfilled.\n\n\u201cIf we are unable to respond to or remedy a situation in which a regime openly ignores international norms and threatens the territorial integrity of its neighbor (Guyana), then we must ask ourselves: What is the point of this organization?\u201d, questioned Landau.\n\nHe also referred to the crisis in Haiti, mired in the violence of criminal gangs and with a transitional government paralyzed by internal disputes and accusations of corruption.\n\nThe United States is promoting a resolution in this Assembly that urges member states to “support” the security mission deployed under the leadership of Kenya and with the endorsement of the UN. However, Landau warned: “The United States cannot continue to bear this heavy financial burden alone.”\n\n“If the OAS is not willing or able to play a constructive role in Haiti, we seriously ask ourselves, ‘Why does it exist?” he insisted.\n\n\n

United States, a Key Player<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThe United States is the main economic donor to the OAS and its contributions represent approximately half of the organization’s budget, but the Trump Administration has not yet paid its corresponding fee for 2025.\n\nDespite his criticism of multilateralism and budget cuts to the UN, the Trump administration had not until now been so openly critical of the OAS.\n\nIt wasn’t even the case last March, when an alliance between Caribbean countries and left-wing governments managed to appoint Surinamese Albert Ramdin as the new secretary general, who is betting on “dialogue” with Venezuela.\n\nLandau’s words of pressure were accompanied by a specific request: he urged member states to support the United States’ candidate to integrate the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the Cuban dissident Rosa Mar\u00eda Pay\u00e1.\n\nPay\u00e1, a fervent critic of the Havana government, is the daughter of the also dissident Oswaldo Pay\u00e1, who died in 2012 in a traffic accident that, according to the IACHR itself, was orchestrated by the Cuban State.\n\n\n
