Kinshasa, June 30 (EFE).- The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), F\u00e9lix Tshisekedi, announced this Monday that his country will soon sign a “strategic” agreement with the United States in the mining sector, after the signing last Friday in Washington of a “historic” peace pact at the ministerial level with neighboring Rwanda.<\/p>\n
“This renewed confidence (from the international community) will soon translate into the signing of an unprecedented strategic agreement with the United States of America in the mining sector,” said Tshisekedi in a speech to the nation this Monday, on the occasion of the sixty-fifth anniversary of the DRC’s independence from Belgium.<\/p>\n
“This agreement marks a decisive step in positioning the Democratic Republic of Congo as a central player in the global energy transition and the emerging green economy,” added the president.<\/p>\n
According to Tshisekedi, the objective of the pact will be to develop Congolese “strategic minerals” sustainably, especially copper, cobalt, and lithium, which are fundamental to the technology industry and the manufacture of mobile phones.<\/p>\n
The agreement will also guarantee, according to the head of state, a “more equitable” distribution for Congolese society of the economic benefits of the sector and will pave the way for “an economic model based on sovereignty and national added value”.<\/p>\n
The DRC “is back, ready to forge reliable, transparent, and, above all, mutually beneficial strategic partnerships,” he concluded, addressing his partners in the US, China, Europe, the Persian Gulf, Africa, and “the whole world.”<\/p>\n
Tshisekedi emphasized, however, that the DRC’s resources “will never be sold or ceded to dark interests”.<\/p>\n
Last March, the Congolese Presidency confirmed to EFE that Tshisekedi offered his American counterpart, Donald Trump, in February, access to key minerals in exchange for his help in defeating the rebel group March 23 Movement (M23), which is fighting against the DRC Army in eastern Congo, with the support of neighboring Rwanda.<\/p>\n
Also, Trump confirmed that the peace agreement signed this June 27 in Washington between the two African countries opens access to the region for the U.S., which will obtain “many of the rights to the minerals of the Congo”, according to the president.<\/p>\n
The foreign ministers of Rwanda and the DRC, Olivier Nduhungirehe and Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Kayikwamba Wagner, respectively, signed the pact at the ministerial level last Friday, which came into force immediately and seeks to end three decades of bilateral tensions.<\/p>\n
Among the provisions included in the document are respect for the territorial integrity of each country, the peaceful resolution of disputes, the prohibition of hostile acts and support for armed groups.<\/p>\n
Since 1998, eastern DRC has been suffering from a conflict fueled by the presence of rebel groups and the Army, despite the deployment of the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC (Monusco).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
