United Nations, June 30 (EFE).- The UN Security Council renewed this Monday for six months, until December 31, the mandate of the ‘blue helmets’ mission in the Syrian Golan, known as UNDOF (“United Nations Disengagement Observer Force”).<\/p>\n
The renewal was unanimously voted for by the fifteen members, something increasingly rare in a council where deep geopolitical divisions are reflected on almost all conflicts around the world.<\/p>\n
According to the UNDOF page, the force is composed of 1,224 people, that is, a relatively small mission of the peacekeeping missions that the UN has deployed in Africa and Asia, mainly.<\/p>\n
UNDOF’s mission was established in 1974 as a kind of ‘buffer’ between the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan and the rest of Syria, and has been systematically renewed, even during the years of the Syrian civil war.<\/p>\n
The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the assumption of the new Syrian government allowed Israel to advance territorially in the Golan, thus occupying the ‘buffer zone’ controlled by UNDOF and even beyond, within Syrian territory.<\/p>\n
The same Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, assured in January and again in April that the Israeli army would remain in those new positions “indefinitely”, something that the Syrian government of Ahmed al Shara can hardly prevent given the decline in its offensive capabilities due to a continuous series of Israeli bombings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
