{"id":475482,"date":"2025-07-20T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/?p=475482"},"modified":"2025-07-20T08:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T12:30:00","slug":"july-20-international-moon-day-in-homage-to-the-first-step-off-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/style\/anniversaries\/july-20-international-moon-day-in-homage-to-the-first-step-off-earth\/","title":{"rendered":"July 20: International Moon Day in homage to the first step off Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"The International Moon Day is every 20th of <a href=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/estilo\/efemerides\/julio-efemerides-y-conmemoraciones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>July<\/strong><\/a> in commemoration <strong>of the landing of the Apollo 11 mission<\/strong>, the first manned trip to reach and descend on the lunar surface.\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/luna_57_600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-204337\" style=\"width:353px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\nThis event not only marked a milestone in the space race, but also represented the beginning of the era of space exploration with human presence beyond planet Earth.\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, the <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/es\/ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations General Assembly<\/a><\/strong> officially declared July 20 as the <em>International Moon Day<\/em><\/strong>, not only to commemorate this historic achievement, but also to raise awareness of the importance of space science and technology, and its role in the sustainable development of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How was the creation of International Moon Day originated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThe establishment of this commemoration by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/es\/ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN<\/a><\/strong> has as its main objective to <strong>recognize the relevance of the first manned landing<\/strong> in history, which occurred on July 20, 1969 with the American mission Apollo 11.\n\nAlso, looking for:\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Raise awareness among the international community<\/strong> about the need to promote the <strong>exploration and sustainable use<\/strong> of the Moon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foster <strong>international cooperation<\/strong> on scientific and space issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight the role of <strong>science, innovation and technology<\/strong> in the progress of humanity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Link space achievements with the <strong>Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong> and contemporary global challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Apollo 11: The First Human Contact with the Moon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/3-1024x726.jpg\" alt=\"D\u00eda Internacional de la Luna \" class=\"wp-image-503962\" style=\"width:387px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\nThe <strong>Apollo 11 mission<\/strong> was the fifth manned mission of the Apollo program developed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a><\/strong> (National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States), and the <strong>first to achieve humans walking on the Moon<\/strong>.\n\nThe mission&#8217;s launch occurred on the <strong>16th of July, 1969<\/strong> from the Kennedy Space Center, in Florida, aboard the <strong>Saturn V<\/strong> rocket. The crew was composed of three astronauts:\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Neil Armstrong<\/strong>, mission commander.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Edwin \u201cBuzz\u201d Aldrin<\/strong>, lunar module pilot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Michael Collins<\/strong>, command module pilot, who remained in lunar orbit while his colleagues descended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\nAfter four days of travel, on <strong>July 20, 1969<\/strong>, the lunar module <strong>&#8220;Eagle&#8221;<\/strong> successfully landed on the surface of the Moon, in an area known as the <strong>Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis)<\/strong>.\n\nIt was then that <strong>Neil Armstrong<\/strong>, upon descending the module&#8217;s ladder, uttered one of the most famous phrases in history:\n\n&#8220;That&#8217;s one small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind.&#8221;\n\nMinutes later, <strong>Buzz Aldrin<\/strong> also descended, becoming the second human to walk on the lunar surface. In total, both astronauts spent <strong>21 hours and 36 minutes<\/strong> on the Moon, while the moonwalk lasted approximately <strong>2 hours and 15 minutes<\/strong>.\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why was the Apollo 11 mission so important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ab.deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2-1024x726.jpg\" alt=\"D\u00eda Internacional de la Luna \" class=\"wp-image-503963\" style=\"width:386px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\nThe Apollo 11 moon landing represented <strong>a technological and political victory<\/strong> for the United States in the context of the Cold War and the Space Race against the Soviet Union. But beyond that historical context, <strong>the mission forever changed humanity&#8217;s relationship with the universe.<\/strong>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This event:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>He demonstrated that space exploration was possible<\/strong>, beyond Earth&#8217;s orbit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He laid the groundwork for future missions, both manned and unmanned, to other celestial bodies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He drove scientific, technological, and engineering advances that are now applied in multiple areas: telecommunications, medicine, materials, transportation, among others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He inspired entire generations to study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Moon in the Future: Sustainability, Science, and International Cooperation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nToday, more than half a century after the first moon landing, <strong>the Moon is once again at the center of global space exploration<\/strong>. Space agencies such as <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, <strong>ESA (European Space Agency)<\/strong>, <strong>Roscosmos (Russia)<\/strong>, <strong>CNSA (China)<\/strong> and <strong>ISRO (India)<\/strong> are planning new missions that not only seek to return to the Moon, but to establish <strong>permanent human presence<\/strong> through scientific bases, resource mining and launch stations for missions to Mars.\n\nIn this sense, the <strong>International Moon Day<\/strong> also promotes a <strong>sustainable use<\/strong> approach, remembering that the expansion of the human being into space must be done with responsibility, cooperation, and an ethical vision.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Moon Day is every 20th of July in commemoration of the landing of the Apollo 11 mission, the first manned trip to reach and descend on the lunar surface.
