<\/h2>\n\n\nSANTO DOMINGO \u2014<\/strong> Two decades after touching glory with the Chicago White Sox<\/strong>, former left-handed pitcher D\u00e1maso Marte<\/strong> has found a new purpose off the diamond: serving as a Christian pastor<\/strong> in the Dominican Republic. The former reliever, remembered for his key role in the 2005 World Series<\/strong>, now leads the Ministry Refuge of Faith and Hope<\/strong> in Santo Domingo, spiritually guiding more than 160 people.\n\n\u201cI made the decision to follow that path, to become a pastor and be a spiritual leader for the people. I have done very well for myself, my family, and my children<\/strong>\u201d, Marte told MLB.com during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the White Sox title, last July 11 at Guaranteed Rate Field.\n\n\n

A storyteller… and of faith<\/h3>\n\n\nMars is part of a little-known but historic trivia<\/strong>: he is one of only three pitchers in World Series history<\/strong> to win a game that was decided in exactly 14 innings<\/strong>. He did it in Game 3 of the 2005 World Series<\/strong>, in Chicago’s sweep over the Astros, joining legendary names like Babe Ruth (1916)<\/strong> and Chris Young (2015)<\/strong>.\n\nAfter retiring from baseball in 2010, after also being crowned with the Yankees in 2009<\/strong>, Marte dedicated himself entirely to religious life. His change was inspired, in part, by the religious services he experienced as a player with the White Sox. “That’s what instilled in me that desire to continue with faith after baseball,” he revealed.\n\n\n

From the little hill to the pulpit<\/h3>\n\n\nDuring his Major League career, Marte was a reliable reliever, with an ERA of “3.77” in 570 games over 11 seasons. His best campaign was in 2003, when he pitched for 1.58 with 11 saves. In 2005, he was an important piece in the historic 11-1 postseason of the White Sox.\n\nAt 50 years old<\/strong>, Marte acknowledges that he misses baseball<\/strong>, but has found peace and purpose in his current work. \u201cI want to bring more guidance and offer spiritual help. We live, but few think about the future beyond this life. That’s what I want to share<\/strong>\u201d.\n\n\n

Mutual respect with Ozzie Guill\u00e9n<\/h3>\n\n\nMarte also shared anecdotes with his ex-manager, the charismatic Ozzie Guill\u00e9n<\/strong>, with whom he maintains a relationship of respect. Guill\u00e9n, true to his direct style, joked at the anniversary meeting: \u201cI thought Marte was in jail or dead. When I saw him, it was special. He is a different man.\u201d Source: MLB\n\n\n
