A magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck the east coast of Russia<\/strong> on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which triggered tsunami alerts<\/strong> in various areas of the Pacific Ocean, including Japan<\/strong>, Hawaii<\/strong>, Alaska<\/strong> and Ecuador<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 136 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk, on the Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of 19 kilometers, the USGS specified. The US agency issued a tsunami alert<\/strong> for Hawaii, the coast of Alaska and other regions of the Pacific.<\/p>\n

The US Tsunami Warning Center warned that Ecuador<\/strong>, in South America, and the eastern coast of Russia<\/strong> could receive waves of more than three meters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Japanese meteorological agency also issued a tsunami alert, with similar warnings. \u201cA tsunami alert was issued on July 30 at 08:37 (23:37 GMT Tuesday)\u201d<\/strong>, the entity reported on the X<\/em> network, noting that \u201ctsunamis will occur repeatedly. Do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the alert is lifted\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Japan<\/strong>, the earthquake was felt lightly, especially in the southeastern tip of Hokkaido, where it reached level two on the Japanese seismic scale<\/strong>, which measures surface intensity. The cities of Kushiro, Akkeshi, Shibetsu, and Betsukai reported perceptible movements but without major damage.<\/p>\n

The seismologist Shinichi Sakai<\/strong>, from the University of Tokyo, explained to the NHK<\/em> network that “a distant earthquake could cause a tsunami that affects Japan if its epicenter is shallow”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Kamchatka<\/strong>, several people suffered minor injuries, including at the regional airport, according to the Russian state agency Tass<\/em>. The governor of the region, Vladimir Solodov<\/strong>, urged residents on Wednesday to stay away from coastal areas. \u201cA tsunami alert has been issued and the strength of the wave is being determined. I urge everyone to stay away from the coast in areas prone to tsunamis and to follow the announcements via loudspeakers\u201d<\/strong>, he stated on Telegram.<\/p>\n

For its part, the New Zealand Disaster Management Agency warned of “strong and unusual currents and unpredictable swells”<\/strong> on the coast.<\/p>\n
