Mexican boxer Julio C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez Jr. was handed over by United States authorities to Mexico, where he had an arrest warrant against him, and is now in a maximum security prison in Hermosillo, in the northern state of Sonora.<\/p>\n
According to the National Detention Registry of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the former world champion was handed over by the U.S. after spending just over a month in a detention center of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) of that country.<\/p>\n
This morning, during her morning press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the deportation of the Mexican boxer.<\/p>\n
“I understand he was deported, I don’t know if yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was going to arrive in Mexico (…) Yes, we were informed that he was going to arrive in Mexico,” the president stated during her morning press conference at the National Palace.<\/p>\n
Without giving information about the penitentiary center where the former middleweight world champion is located, Sheinbaum highlighted the “arrest warrant” against him in Mexico since 2023 for organized crime and arms trafficking, which was confirmed last month by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).<\/p>\n
“There was an arrest warrant, that was communicated several weeks ago when they detained him there (USA), there was an arrest warrant in Mexico from the Attorney General’s Office,” he said.<\/p>\n
The boxer, son of the legendary Julio C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez, was facing a legal process in the United States, where he was arrested in early July for entering illegally and is accused of having alleged links with the Sinaloa Cartel.<\/p>\n
According to the report, Ch\u00e1vez Jr. was arrested on Monday morning at the Dennis Deconcini checkpoint in Nogales, Sonora, and was immediately incarcerated in the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation (Cefereso) of the state.<\/p>\n
Ch\u00e1vez Jr., 39, was arrested on July 3 in the United States. The arrest came after the boxer lost a fight in Anaheim (USA) against Jake Paul.<\/p>\n
The U.S. government accuses him of having ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, in addition to not having documents to be legally in the country.<\/p>\n
Although in December 2024 it was declared “a serious threat to public safety” of the country, in the end the US authorities determined that his case was not a priority and he was not arrested at that time.<\/p>\n
