In the aisles of any beauty store, or, rather, in TikTok feeds, the protagonists are no longer just adult women with complex ten-step routines. Now, they are ten-year-old girls applying retinol serums, glycolic acid masks, and toners that were previously reserved for skin with more than two decades of life. The rise of skincare<\/a> among teenagers has burst onto the scene as a viral trend, as bright as it is worrying.<\/p>\n\n\n“With over a billion views under hashtags like #TeenSkincare and #DrunkElephant, we see a generation that has traded toys for serum bottles. And behind the pastel-toned packaging and chic textures lies a reality that often goes unnoticed: these products are not designed for them,” considered Doreen Guti\u00e9rrez, beauty coach, lecturer, and co-host of the podcast “Diario de Belleza”.\n\nThe founder of Bana Cosmetics indicated that brands like Glow Recipe, The Ordinary, and Drunk Elephant \u2014 whose packaging seems designed to star in a social media unboxing \u2014 have captured the curiosity of children and teenagers, without a clear differentiation between developing skin and adult skin.\n\n“Ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, or even retinol are being used without professional guidance, putting the skin’s natural barrier at risk. Applying these active ingredients unnecessarily can cause sensitivity, breakouts, irritation, and imbalances,” she said.\n\nTeenage skin is generally healthy, elastic, and with excellent collagen production. It doesn’t need to be depigmented, rejuvenated, or exfoliated with strong chemicals. What it does need is education: gentle cleansing, basic hydration, and sunscreen.\n\n“The problem isn’t just the product, but the message: that natural skin is no longer enough. That the ‘glow’ must come in a bottle. That without an eight-step routine, you’re not part of the conversation. It’s not about demonizing these brands or cosmetic advances, but about educating parents and young people about their proper use, the importance of consulting with professionals, and the need to better regulate advertising messages,” added Guti\u00e9rrez.\n\n\n
