China asserted this Monday that its cooperation with Latin American countries is “mutually beneficial” and based on “respect”, in response to Admiral Alvin Holsey, head of the U.S. Southern Command, who stated in Buenos Aires that the Asian country seeks to “export its authoritarian model” in the region.<\/p>\n
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, these comments follow “an old pattern, false and inconsistent with the facts” and reveal “the Cold War mentality that many people in the United States still maintain.”<\/p>\n
“Over the years, China has cooperated in various fields with several Latin American countries based on respect, equality, mutual benefit, and inclusion,” he pointed out.<\/p>\n
He also said that this cooperation “has served the common interest of both parties” and that it has “boosted the economies of these countries”, something that has been “welcomed” by the people of the region.<\/p>\n
“In contrast, the United States has tried for years and in every way to interfere and control the region with intimidating behavior,” he added.<\/p>\n
According to the spokesperson, Latin America “is not the backyard of the West” and has “every right to choose its partners and its own path of development.”<\/p>\n
“Cooperation between China and Latin America is not directed at any third country, nor should it be disturbed by any third country,” he added.<\/p>\n
Gao recommended that the United States “stop sowing discord” and do “something tangible” for those countries.<\/p>\n
For his part, Holsey accused the Chinese Communist Party (CCP, ruling) of attempting to expand its “authoritarian model” through a strategy where it seeks to extract valuable resources and establish infrastructure that could have dual use, from ports to space facilities.<\/p>\n
The head of the Southern Command traveled accompanied by the Under Secretary of Defense for National Defense and Hemispheric Affairs of the United States, Roosevelt Ditlevson, who also emphasized the Chinese threat.<\/p>\n
“Chinese companies capture land, capture critical infrastructure and strategic sectors such as energy and communications.
