The president of the Confederation of Commerce of Provisions and Mipymes of the Dominican Republic (Confecomercio), Gilberto Luna, stated that provision merchants, wholesalers, retailers, markets, and suppliers are experiencing their worst moment in the last five years as a consequence of the government authorities’ mistakes.<\/p>\n
He explained that the rise in the dollar exchange rate, the increase in blackouts, the rise in crime, the increase in prices of products and services in the basic food basket, among other problems generated by the lack of adequate policies, represents a threat to the social peace of the Dominican people.<\/p>\n
Luna pointed out that the dollar, in the last two months, has increased by around 400 points, so that as of today economic transactions in commerce are being made at around 64 pesos per dollar, which is leading to price increases in different products.<\/p>\n
He cited among them beer, bottled water, eggs, chicken, plastic disposables, pork, among other products in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
In that sense, he added that with the rate of increase that the dollar rate is taking, it is expected that by December it will be reaching almost 70 pesos per 1 dollar, which will bring as a consequence another general increase in prices and services by more than 20%.<\/p>\n
Likewise, he stated that the increase in power outages in the electrical service is notorious throughout the country, ranging from 12, 24, 36 and up to 48 hours, and at the same time an increase in the electricity bill.<\/p>\n
He added that these interruptions are considerably decreasing sales in the colmados and other collection centers, because there is no way to refrigerate them, so the trade sector is having losses of billions of pesos due to this problem.<\/p>\n
“These price increases, the issue of the dollar, the rise in crime, and the reduction in sales have the trade on the verge of bankruptcy, which is the beginning of the end for retail trade, and the government authorities don’t say a word,” said the commercial leader.<\/p>\n
The president of Confecomercio also highlighted that some government officials are hinting that a tax reform is on the way, after questioning that this measure would represent a further increase in prices and services for consumers.<\/p>\n
“Finally, we understand that the inoperability of the current Government will lead the population to a social outburst, losing the peace that has characterized the country for years, so a moment will come when staggered strikes in the trade sector will come again in response to the inoperability of this government that we have,” Luna expressed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
