In recent years, several events that occurred in different parts of the country left a fatal toll that still generates mourning.\n\nThe most recent accident occurred this Saturday when a garbage truck suffered a brake failure and ran over a group of people who were sharing and consuming drinks on the public road.\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You may be interested in:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/Tragedia en La Altagracia: Accidente en La Ceiba del Salado deja al menos 20 muertos\">http:\/\/Tragedia en La Altagracia: Accidente en La Ceiba del Salado deja al menos 20 muertos<\/a><\/p>\n\n\nThe accident left a preliminary <strong>toll of more than 20 dead and dozens injured<\/strong>, including several children who were traveling in a van hit by the heavy vehicle. The driver fled the scene, but the authorities are maintaining a search operation.\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar event occurred during the patron saint festivities of La Yayas, Azua, a truck loaded with avocados lost control on the <strong>Bajada de Bastida<\/strong> and hit several people in front of a bar. It left a balance of <strong>ten dead<\/strong> and dozens injured, including a police sergeant and a member of the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>East Zone Epicenter of Accidents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The East Zone of the country has been the main epicenter of major disasters that have claimed the lives of Dominican and foreign citizens. In September 2023, two buses transporting employees from two hotels on the <strong>Hig\u00fcey-La Otra Banda highway, La Altagracia province<\/strong>, collided, leaving eight dead and three injured. <\/p>\n\n\nThe deceased were identified as J<strong>os\u00e9 Luis Rojas Cruz, 40 years old, who was driving one of the buses, as well as passengers Francisca Gil, 34; Yudy Familia Romero, 49; Arqu\u00edmedes Tolentino and Zoribel Carpio Cuello, both 31 years old<\/strong>, Juan Bautista N\u00fa\u00f1ez, 47 years old, and Santa Caraballo and Erickson Garc\u00eda Moreta\n\nIn July 2022, one person dead and more than 12 injured was the result of a multiple accident <strong>on the Ver\u00f3n-Punta Cana highway, in the municipality of Hig\u00fcey.<\/strong>\n\nThe event occurred at 5:00 in the morning and involved a bus that was transporting workers of Haitian and Dominican nationality.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Others involving buses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nAnother of the most tragic road accidents recorded in the region left a balance of five deceased tourists and 47 injured people.\n\nThe accident occurred on October 6, 2022, at the Domingo Ma\u00edz Crossing, located on the East Tourist Boulevard, while the group was traveling to Saona Island.\n\nThe bus driver, Franklin Nin P\u00e9rez, was subjected to precautionary measures that include a financial guarantee of 500,000 pesos and periodic appearances, remaining on probation.\n\nOn <strong>May 30, 2023,<\/strong> a traffic accident at kilometer 11 of the Hato Mayor del Rey\u2013S\u00e1bana de la Mar highway <strong>recorded<\/strong> a balance of two deceased students and 14 injured, seven of them seriously.\n\nThe incident occurred when a school bus transporting students to an educational center in Manchado, Hato Mayor, was hit by a tractor-trailer.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sleepless<\/strong>,<strong> a high-risk stretch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nSan Crist\u00f3bal was plunged into mourning in November 2023 after a tragic accident on the S\u00e1nchez highway, Quita Sue\u00f1o sector, Haina, which <strong>claimed the lives of ten people<\/strong> and left 17 injured.\n\nThe accident involved a cement-laden truck and a public passenger transport bus. According to witnesses and images from a surveillance camera, the accident occurred when the truck was descending a slope in a west-east direction and hit the bus as it was boarding a passenger, before 7:00 in the morning.\n\nOn December 2, 2023, another accident involved a passenger bus and a tractor-trailer in the same area. <strong>12 deaths<\/strong> were confirmed, including the bus driver, Uris M\u00e9ndez, who was found one day after the accident.\n\nWhile on June 20, 2024, a multiple-vehicle accident involved five vehicles on the S\u00e1nchez highway, in the <strong>Las Colinas, Bajos de Haina<\/strong> sector. The incident left <strong>at least 5 dead<\/strong> and several injured.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nOn July 20, 2025, a tragic traffic accident on the Moca\u2013Jamao al Norte highway, specifically in the community of La Cabirma, San V\u00edctor municipality, Espaillat province, left a balance of <strong>six people dead<\/strong> and more than <strong>40 injured<\/strong>.\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bus known as a &#8220;Banderita&#8221;, which was transporting a group of people returning from an excursion from R\u00edo San Juan to Esperanza, lost control in a mountainous area known as La Cumbre. It is presumed that a brake failure caused the vehicle to overturn, ending up across the road.<\/p>\n\n\nMeanwhile, on August 1st, a truck hit a motoconcho stop on the 6 de Noviembre highway, in the province of San Crist\u00f3bal, leaving a balance of <strong>five dead<\/strong> and several injured.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Authorities Report Reduction in Accidents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nDespite the tragic accidents that have occurred, the Dominican Republic has recorded a 45% reduction in traffic accident deaths during the first seven months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.\n\nAccording to the Permanent Road Safety Observatory (Opsevi), between January and July, 1,086 fatalities were reported, compared to the 1,987 recorded in 2024.
