Miami (USA),.-<\/strong> A US judge temporarily blocked this Sunday the plans of the government of President Donald Trump<\/strong> to deport hundreds of Guatemalan minors who arrived alone in the United States and who are in the custody of the authorities.<\/p>\n

The district judge of Columbia Sparkle L. Sooknanan<\/strong> ordered the Executive not to deport for two weeks the children from Guatemala, who were included in an emergency request from the National Immigration Law Center, to stop their repatriation.<\/p>\n

According to the minors’ lawyers, aged between 10 and 16, the Administration violated due process, since the children have pending cases before Immigration courts, and ignored the special protections of those who crossed the border between Mexico and the United States alone.<\/p>\n

In an afternoon hearing, the magistrate said it was “surprising” that the Government is “trying to remove minors from the country in the middle of the night during a holiday weekend.”<\/p>\n

Sooknanan’s order came when several of the children were already on planes that were going to send them back to Guatemala, according to Justice Department representative Drew Ensign.<\/p>\n

The lawyer added that the Government was unaware of the order issued by the judge early on Sunday when they were moving the minors to the planes.<\/p>\n

According to CNN, the measure would apply to 600 children from Guatemala who are currently in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).<\/p>\n

Data from the Office of Administration for Children and Families, under HHS, reveals that the United States had 2,198 unaccompanied minors in custody in July. However, it does not disclose their nationalities.<\/p>\n

Most minors who cross the land border between the United States and Mexico alone come from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, according to the NGO ‘Save The Children’.<\/p>\n

Repatriation also poses a challenge for the Trump Administration in light of the Flores Agreement, in force for three decades. A federal court in Los Angeles (California) is currently overseeing the implementation of the pact that the US Executive has sought to end.<\/p>\n

The agreement, which was signed in 1997 after years of litigation, establishes that federal authorities cannot hold undocumented minors in detention centers for more than 20 days and must guarantee their safety and well-being.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
