The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT, Parliament) of Burkina Faso, a country led by a military junta, has unanimously adopted a bill that penalizes any homosexual practice with up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n
The ALT approved this Monday the project on the Code of Persons and Family, which provides for penalties of two to five years in prison, accompanied by fines, for those who are convicted of these practices, local media reported last night.<\/p>\n
In case of recidivism, if the person is not of Burkinabe nationality, “they will be purely and simply expelled from the country,” said the Minister of Justice, Rodrigue Bayala, quoted by the Burkina Information Agency (AIB, public news agency).<\/p>\n
The new regulations in this West African country are part of a recent escalation of anti-LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex) rhetoric on the African continent, where more than thirty of the more than sixty countries that criminalize same-sex relationships in the world are located.<\/p>\n
Burkina Faso suffered two coups in 2022: one on January 24, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, and another on September 30, led by Captain Ibrahim Traor\u00e9, who currently leads the nation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
