That sentence influenced how this popular movement – born in the heat of other contemporaries such as the Brazilian Getúlio Vargas or the Mexican Lázaro Cárdenas – conceived itself and has endured to this day.

The first clash of Perón was with the Catholic Church, to which a faction of the Army joined, pushed by the conservative elites, who did not look favorably upon how Perón had become the leader of the working class. In this context, he was re-elected in 1951 as president.

On June 16, 1955, Navy aircraft identified with Catholic sectors bombed the Plaza de Mayo and the presidential residence in an attempt to kill Perón. Consequently, they murdered more than 300 people; and three months later the military overthrew him.

What was and what is Peronism?

Historian Camila Perochena, from the Torcuato Di Tella University, defines, in statements to EFE, Peronism as “a very disruptive mass political movement in Argentine history and one of the movements that inaugurates the populist tradition in Latin America.”

Martín Rodríguez, political analyst and essayist, assures EFE that, throughout its history, Peronism is “the force that best understands the relationship between the political system and society”.

“Perón does something different from what had been done, he proposes that the labor movement should be integrated and not repressed because, for him, that was the way to avoid a communist revolution”, explains Perochena.

Perón began in politics as Secretary of Labor during the military government of Edelmiro Farrell and, from that position, established a relationship with the unions and promoted labor rights.

After being imprisoned due to internal disputes within that Government, on October 17, 1945, hundreds of thousands of workers took to the streets to demand his freedom, which catapulted him to win the presidential elections that year and begin a transformative government.

Juan Manuel Abal Medina, political scientist and former Chief of Staff during the Cristina Fernández government (2007-2015), explained to EFE his interpretation of the Peronist phenomenon: “What was achieved in Europe in terms of social equality over decades, Peronism did it in less than ten years. In a very short time, the field worker went from being the property of the boss to living with him on the beaches where they now vacationed equally.”

A Democratic Party

Faced with the new Argentina that emerged, the economic and political sectors opposed to Peronism tried various strategies to control it: from proscribing it and persecuting and assassinating its militants, as happened during the last dictatorship (1976-1983), to co-opting it to provide it with a neoliberal program, as was the case of the Presidency of Carlos Menem (1989-1999).

This movement always came to power through the democratic path: Perón in 1945, 1951 and 1973 (after his return to the country); Menem in 1989 and 1995; Néstor Kirchner in 2003; his wife Cristina Fernández in 2007 and 2011; and Alberto Fernández in 2019.

“Peronism knows how to lose,” highlights analyst Martín Rodríguez, recalling that it has also been defeated since the return of democracy to Argentina: Raúl Alfonsín in 1983, Fernando De La Rúa in 1999, Mauricio Macri in 2015, and Javier Milei in 2023.

“For anti-Peronists -adds Rodríguez- Peronism is a kind of long exception that one day has to end, but that’s what makes it the rule. Peronism is a subsystem of the Argentine political system.”

Abal Medina adds the social factor that keeps the movement alive: “The unions were strengthened to defend the conquests of Peronism for that equality achieved in favor of the workers.”

More relevant than ever

Today, the main opponent of the far-right Milei is in Peronism: in the recent legislative elections of the province of Buenos Aires, which brings together 40% of the population, the coalition led by Peronist governor Axel Kicillof defeated La Libertad Avanza by more than 13 points, which unleashed a crisis of confidence in the markets and put the national government in check.

Kicillof is now emerging as a possible candidate to challenge Milei for the Presidency in 2027, while the leadership of the Justicialist Party remains in the hands of the influential Cristina Fernández, who is serving a six-year sentence of house arrest for fraudulent administration of public works.

Buenos Aires.- Seventy years after the military coup against the then-president of Argentina, Juan Domingo Perón, who left on September 16, 1955, for a long exile, Peronism remains a political movement of global reference and today is the great alternative to the far-right Javier Milei.
