With the aim of defending freedom of expression within the U.S., Washington claims to have ended “all frameworks designed to counter information manipulation by foreign states and any associated instruments implemented” by the Biden Administration, the State Department announced this Wednesday.<\/p>\n
In this context, the organization recalled that on April 16 of this year, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the closure of the Office to Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, formerly known as the Global Engagement Center (GEC).<\/p>\n
“The framework, initially launched by the GEC to counter so-called disinformation, ended up becoming a tool of political censorship instead of protecting Americans from foreign adversarial propaganda,” reads the statement.<\/p>\n
From the U.S. Department of State, it was specified that the closure of these institutions aligns with the executive order of the U.S. President, Donald Trump, launched on January 20 “on restoring free speech and ending federal censorship, which prohibits censorship by the federal government and promotes freedom of expression.”<\/p>\n
“Through free expression, the U.S. will counter the authentic malicious propaganda of adversaries that threaten our national security, while protecting the right of Americans to exchange ideas,” the statement concludes.<\/p>\n
Censoring American voices
\nDuring Joe Biden’s presidency, the Office Against Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference published several reports accusing other countries, including Russia and China, of carrying out disinformation and propaganda campaigns in other regions, such as Latin America and Africa, and was widely criticized for censorship and manipulation.<\/p>\n
Thus, the magnate Elon Musk called it in 2023 the “biggest offender of censorship and media manipulation of the US Government” and a “threat” to democracy.<\/p>\n
When announcing the closure of the institution in April, Rubio stated that the Biden Administration “spent millions of dollars to actively silence and censor the voices of Americans they were supposed to serve” and that its activities “cost taxpayers more than $50 million a year.”<\/p>\n
