France suspended the counter-terrorism cooperation it maintained with Mali and expelled two of its agents stationed in Paris after the authorities of that African country arrested a French military officer stationed in Bamako, French diplomatic sources indicated this Friday.<\/p>\n
The tension between both countries escalated after the arrest in the Malian capital last August of an agent who, according to Paris, was working in the fight against terrorism and whom the military junta that has governed the country since the 2020 coup accuses of having participated in an attempt to destabilize, for which other Malian military personnel were also arrested.<\/p>\n
For France, this is an “arbitrary” arrest that “violates the most fundamental rules of international law”, as it concerns an agent duly accredited to the French Embassy in Bamako and, therefore, protected by diplomatic immunity.<\/p>\n
Therefore, it has suspended counter-terrorism cooperation with Mali despite the cooling of relations between the two countries after the coup that brought General Assimi Go\u00efta to power.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, I decide the expulsion of two people from the embassy and consulate of Mali in Paris, who must leave French territory before this Saturday.<\/p>\n
Paris threatened “other measures” of short-term pressure if its agent is not released “quickly”.<\/p>\n
