{"id":484852,"date":"2025-09-29T08:03:54","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T12:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/uncategorized\/the-trial-against-the-suspended-south-sudanese-vice-president-is-postponed-for-two-more-days\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T08:03:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T12:03:54","slug":"the-trial-against-the-suspended-south-sudanese-vice-president-is-postponed-for-two-more-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/uncategorized\/the-trial-against-the-suspended-south-sudanese-vice-president-is-postponed-for-two-more-days\/","title":{"rendered":"The trial against the suspended South Sudanese vice president is postponed for two more days"},"content":{"rendered":"The trial against the suspended South Sudanese vice president, Riek Machar, and seven other opposition leaders scheduled for today will finally be held this Wednesday, October 1, after the court decided to postpone its celebration two more days with the aim of extending the deadline for submitting evidence and witnesses.\n\nDuring the hearing, Judge James Alala rejected the defense&#8217;s request for immunity, emphasizing that Article 103 of the Constitution &#8220;applies only to the president and not to the first vice president,&#8221; which leaves Machar without special protection.\n\nThe magistrate also ordered the expulsion of two defense lawyers, John Deng and Wernyang Kiir, after considering that they lacked valid licenses to practice, so they were escorted out of the courtroom by the Police.\n\n&#8220;They will only be able to return once their licenses are renewed and the Supreme Court grants them authorization,&#8221; Alala declared.\n\nIn the view of this day, the court allowed for the first time since the beginning of the process the entry of all media, after the South Sudan Union of Journalists (UJOSS) denounced that in previous sessions only the state television SSBC was authorized access.\n\nThe trial against Machar, suspended Petroleum Minister Puot Kang, and six other high-ranking officials of the Sudan People&#8217;s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) began last week after being detained since March.\n\nThe charges include murder, terrorism, treason, and crimes against humanity, in relation to the attack perpetrated by the opposition militia White Army last March at the Nasir barracks, in which more than 250 government soldiers, a high-ranking commander, and a UN pilot died.\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the beginning of the trial last Monday, at least 76 people have died in various clashes between the Army and Machar&#8217;s forces, a violence that rekindles fears that the 2018 peace agreement will collapse and the world&#8217;s youngest country will return to open conflict.<\/p>\n\n\nMachar had been serving since 2020 and until his suspension on September 11th as vice president and leader of the opposition under the 2018 peace agreement, which ended five years of civil war and provided for a power-sharing arrangement and the creation of a unified army between the government and the opposition, commitments that have not been met.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trial against the suspended South Sudanese vice president, Riek Machar, and seven other opposition leaders scheduled for today will finally be held this Wednesday, October 1, after the court decided to postpone its celebration two more days with the aim of extending the deadline for submitting evidence and witnesses.
