The daughter of Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia, Mariana Gonz\u00e1lez, requested this Saturday in a public letter to the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) support to be able to ascertain the situation of her husband, Rafael Tudares, detained since January 7, with whom she claims she has had “no communication whatsoever” in that time.<\/p>\n
“For 277 days, more than nine months, we have lived and suffered the forced disappearance due to the arbitrary detention of my husband Rafael on January 7, 2025. We have not received proof of life nor access to any communication with him, and we have been absolutely prevented from delivering medicines and personal hygiene items,” she said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he continued, he still does not know “his real fate and whereabouts”, which, he warned, has broken the life of the family and “has put his life, health and physical integrity at risk”.<\/p>\n
Gonz\u00e1lez L\u00f3pez asks the Church for “pastoral accompaniment” to the “family and, if possible, a visit or pastoral management before the authorities that allows to verify Rafael’s situation”, as well as a pronouncement by the CEV “in favor of the rights to life, physical integrity and due process of Rafael, urging that his whereabouts and condition be reported, and that all forms of incommunicado cease”.<\/p>\n
In the letter, which he published on X, he also requests “arrangements for his medical treatment to be received and administered and for him to be allowed access to basic items”, as well as a call for “his defense to be guaranteed and national and international humanitarian norms relating to the protection of persons deprived of their liberty to be respected”.<\/p>\n
“My fight for Rafael is neither political nor partisan. Neither Rafael nor I have any involvement or participation in Venezuelan politics. All my efforts during these nine months have been essentially humanitarian. I ask and beg for what every family asks: to know where he is, how he is, and that his rights as a person, husband, and father are guaranteed, the minimum rights that derive from human dignity,” he expressed.<\/p>\n
Likewise, it celebrated the recent pronouncement of the CEV in which the conference said that the canonization, on October 19, of the doctor Jos\u00e9 Gregorio Hern\u00e1ndez and the religious Carmen Rendiles, the first Venezuelan saints, represents “an opportune occasion for the State authorities to dictate measures of grace that allow the incarcerated for political reasons to regain their freedom”.<\/p>\n
On June 23rd, Mariana Gonz\u00e1lez reported that a court agreed to proceed with the trial of her husband for the alleged crimes of “forgery, conspiracy, terrorism, association, legitimization and financing”.<\/p>\n
That month, she reiterated that her husband has “nothing to do with the political conflict that keeps him deprived of his freedom”, alluding to the crisis that erupted in the country after the opposition’s largest coalition denounced fraud following the proclamation of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro as re-elected president in the July 2024 elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
