The growth of debt is easily calculated: loans disbursed minus payment of matured principal,” said the former president.

In that sense, he explained that when a government takes financing to pay off old debts, a part is used to meet overdue commitments and the rest increases the public debt, so the total amount is not reduced.

“If President Abinader had really paid 80% of the debt left by my government, then the country would not have continued to incur debt. However, in these four years and a bit, the debt has grown by more than 24 billion pesos, which shows a clear contradiction,” said Medina.

The former head of state added that all governments have the obligation to continue paying the country’s financial commitments as part of public management, and considered it “unusual” that a president highlights as an achievement “an ordinary responsibility of the State”.

Likewise, he attributed the increase in debt to the current government’s poor economic management and warned that Abinader resorts to this discourse “to justify the deficiencies of his management.”

The statements were offered by the former president this Sunday, during a celebration of an assembly with members and supporters of the PLD that took place in the pavilion of the Club Plaza Valerio, in the La Joya sector of Santiago, where he was accompanied by members of the Political Committee of that political organization, provincial leaders of this city

Santiago. – Former President of the Republic, Danilo Medina, rejected the statements of President Luis Abinader, who recently claimed that 80% of the loans taken by his administration have been used to pay debts left by the governments of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
