The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol)<\/strong> announced the results of its first case study on concussions<\/strong> that occurred in its men’s tournaments between 2022 and 2024, marking a milestone in regional sports medicine. The report, prepared by the Conmebol Medical Commission<\/strong>, collects information on injuries detected in 930 matches<\/strong>, with the participation of 5,928 players<\/strong> between 15 and 44 years old.\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a unique opportunity to have centralized all the information of the official matches in the Medical Commission. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of the Conmebol protocol to detect serious concussions on the field,\u201d Pangrazio emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Key findings of the study<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nThe analysis identified 27 cases of concussion<\/strong> that required the player’s immediate removal from the field.\n\n\n

  • 37%<\/strong> occurred between minutes 21 and 45<\/strong> of the match.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 60%<\/strong> of the cases affected visiting players.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 2.6 concussions were recorded per 1,000 hours of play<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\nFurthermore, the study details that the most frequent injuries<\/strong> in Conmebol tournaments during the last three years were:\n\n\n

    2. Muscle tears \u2013 45 cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Ankle sprains \u2013 38 cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Mild concussions \u2013 23 cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Knee sprains with medial collateral ligament involvement \u2013 23 cases<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\nPangrazio also noted a variation in the incidence of injuries<\/strong> depending on the altitude, with a higher number of cases in cities located between 1,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level<\/strong>.\n\n\n

      Medical protocol adapted to the region<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nThe Rapid Concussion Recognition Protocol<\/strong> requires team doctors to fill out a form after each game<\/strong>, even when no injury has been recorded, in order to maintain a complete and standardized database.\n\n\n

      “Our study presents a culturally adapted concussion detection protocol implemented by Conmebol,” explained Pangrazio.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

      Comparison with UEFA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nThe Conmebol and UEFA jointly conducted an additional study to compare the incidences and patterns of injuries<\/strong> in the 2024 Copa Am\u00e9rica<\/strong> and the 2024 Eurocup<\/strong>.\n\n\n
