Tonight’s explosion of a device in the car of a well-known Italian journalist and television presenter, Sigfrido Ranucci, has outraged Italy, uniting all politicians in denouncing this “worrying” act of “intimidation”.<\/p>\n
The explosion was allegedly caused by a device placed near his vehicle while it was parked in front of his house in the town of Pomezia, near Rome, and, although it did not cause any injuries, it left his car and his daughter’s car severely damaged.<\/p>\n
The journalist’s neighbors were shocked this morning by these events, after confirming they had heard the loud noise and learned of the news later through social media.<\/p>\n
Ranucci, presenter of the popular investigative program ‘Report’ on public television RAI, has denounced this “threat”, assuring that he had already received others before, such as bullets left at his door: “Now we have gone up a level,” he declared to the media.<\/p>\n
Both the Government and the various political figures in the country have condemned these events, calling them a threat to freedom of the press and expression.<\/p>\n
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, issued a statement to express her “total solidarity” with the journalist and condemn this “serious act of intimidation”.<\/p>\n
“Freedom and independence of information are inalienable values of our democracies that we will continue to defend,” he proclaimed.<\/p>\n
For their part, several ministers sent their messages of outrage, such as the Minister of Justice, Carlos Nordio, the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, or the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, who assured that “there is no reason to justify this violence”.<\/p>\n
Also popular figures from journalism and culture, such as the journalist and writer Roberto Saviano, under protection for his books against the mafia, condemned these events: “When it is decided that a journalist can become a target, it means that someone wants to establish that certain topics should not be touched,” he wrote on his Instagram.<\/p>\n
Ranucci declared this Friday upon leaving the police station after filing the complaint that around 22:17 hours (20:17 GMT) he heard a noise, and that it is still impossible to say who did it.<\/p>\n
“They believe it’s a rudimentary artifact but that it could have killed anyone who was in the area at that moment,” the journalist stated.<\/p>\n
The secretary of the opposing Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, called the event an “attack on democracy and freedom of information”.<\/p>\n
“We cannot accept intimidation against investigative journalism. Those responsible and the reason for this very serious attack must be found,” he demanded.<\/p>\n
The reason or authorship of the events is currently unknown.<\/p>\n
However, after the intervention of the firefighters, the case is being investigated by the special operations division of the police and by the Anti-Mafia prosecutors of Rome, who are considering the crime of damage with the aggravating factor of mafia method, according to media reports.<\/p>\n
