Bogot\u00e1.- <\/strong>Former Colombian President \u00c1lvaro Uribe (2002-2010) stated this Tuesday, after being acquitted on appeal by the Superior Court of Bogot\u00e1 of the crimes of procedural fraud and bribery in criminal proceedings, that “the majesty of Justice has to be above politics”.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n“Today I remembered my professors from the Faculty of Law at the University of Antioquia, who had opposing ideas, opposed to each other, like Carlos Gaviria and N\u00f3dier Agudelo, and yet instilled in the classroom that the majesty of Justice has to be above politics”<\/strong>, said Uribe in a brief live statement through his YouTube channel.\n\n\n

You may be interested in:<\/strong> http:\/\/Justicia colombiana absuelve a \u00c1lvaro Uribe en caso de soborno y fraude<\/a><\/p>\n\n\nThe former president, founder, and leader of the right-wing Democratic Center party, added that he learned from his teachers that one should not judge “perceptions about the human being” but rather adhere “to the comparison between the legal norm and the facts (…) without being impressed by the judgments of friends or adversaries.”\n\nUribe, who claimed to have told “the truth throughout this extensive public life”, thanked his lawyers, the media “large and small” and his supporters “for their support and prayers”.\n\nThe former president was sentenced in the first instance on August 1st of this year by Judge Sandra Heredia, of the 44th Criminal Court of Bogota for the crimes that today the Superior Court of Bogota, under the presentation of magistrate Manuel Antonio Merch\u00e1n, annulled, considering that there was not enough direct evidence to sustain the sentence.\n\nThis case against Uribe dates back to 2012 when the former president sued the leftist politician Iv\u00e1n Cepeda before the Supreme Court of Justice for alleged manipulation of witnesses, while the latter was preparing a complaint in Congress against him for alleged links with paramilitary groups.\n\nBut the Court not only decided not to investigate Cepeda but also opened a process against Uribe after finding evidence that he manipulated witnesses to prevent them from linking him to the right-wing paramilitarism that confronted the left-wing guerrillas during the Colombian armed conflict.\n\nCepeda, today a senator and presidential pre-candidate, accredited as a victim in this process, assured after learning of the ruling that he will present an appeal for cassation before the Supreme Court of Justice, the court that will have the last word.\n\nThis absolution paves the way for Uribe’s return to electoral activity as he will be number 25 on the closed list to the Senate of the Democratic Center for the legislative elections of March 8th of next year.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
