Political leaders, led by the president of the New York City Council, Adrienne Adams, and religious leaders of various faiths sent a forceful message this Thursday to President Donald Trump to keep his hands “off the city”, which “does not want or need a federal or military occupation”, as is happening in other cities in the country.<\/p>\n
“We are united here today to demand that Donald Trump keep his hands off New York City, and not interfere with our neighbors, our children, and our communities,” Adams said at a press conference, and emphasized that “his administration has shown a willingness to ignore democracy and send military forces against its own people.”<\/p>\n
The warning comes after last Tuesday, about 40 immigration agents and other federal agencies showed up masked in the city and arrested nine people in the middle of the street in the commercial area of Canals Street, near the popular Chinatown and SoHo, always crowded with street vendors.<\/p>\n
The raid sowed panic among the vendors, who tried to run to avoid being arrested, as well as protests in the city.<\/p>\n
Adams, Council President for the Democratic Party, insisted that immigration agents have repeatedly violated constitutional rights, “illegally making members of our communities disappear and separating families.”<\/p>\n
“This only weakens our local communities and our economy by disrupting our neighborhoods and their small business corridors, all for politics. We don’t need more disruptions like this,” he stated.<\/p>\n
He also warned that they will not allow the deployment of National Guard troops, as has already occurred in California, Illinois, and Oregon, where there have been clashes with residents who oppose their anti-immigrant policy.<\/p>\n
“If Trump really cared about public safety, he wouldn’t be cutting funds for crime victims, education, affordable housing, support for the working class in our city and our country,” said the New York City Council Speaker.<\/p>\n
For her, true public safety consists of “investing in communities, expanding access to medical care, and ensuring that people have good jobs and stable housing.”<\/p>\n
For her part, Councilwoman Shahana Hanif, daughter of immigrants, pointed out that what happened on Canals Street is “shameful.”<\/p>\n
“We will not be silenced. We will not yield, and we will not allow this type of overreach that has only generated chaos and fear,” he affirmed, while other members of the municipal legislature also stood in solidarity with the immigrant community and labeled the raid by agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) as a “political maneuver.”<\/p>\n
Reverend Charles O. Galbreath, from the century-old Alliance Tabernacle, emphasized that his church primarily serves immigrant populations, who experience “fear, anxiety, and uncertainty” every day, which, he added, “is unacceptable and cannot continue.”<\/p>\n
“The Trump administration has to take its hands off New York City,” he added.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, the Street Vendor Project, which groups street vendors, pointed out that those affected on Tuesday by the raid are from West Africa and blamed the city for not granting new licenses decades ago that would allow them to work without being accused of violating the law or being exposed to arrest by the local police or ICE.<\/p>\n
The raid took place less than two weeks before the city’s mayoral election on November 4th and in which the Democratic candidate, Zohran Madami, leads in the polls over his main rival, the independent Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
