Better to continue the resistance than to open the way to a total occupation within a couple of years for the illusion of peace,” argued Kolesnikov on X.\n\nHe referred to the point of Trump’s plan that contemplates the cession of Donbas, in the east, to Russia and the freezing of the current front in the southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, as well as the official recognition of the occupied Crimean peninsula as de facto Russian.\n\nA difficult choice\nAccording to the latest polls, most Ukrainians believe that freezing the combat along the current front line, as well as reliable security guarantees against further aggression, should be the basis for any negotiation.\n\nAt the same time, the situation at the front is perceived as deteriorating, amid an increase in desertions and external support less than expected.\n\n\n
Although the U.S. has reduced its military support under Trump, diminishing its influence over Ukraine, the military intelligence it provides remains vital for Ukrainian attacks against the Russian rear.<\/p>\n\n\nThis gives Russian President Vladimir Putin valid reasons to believe that Ukraine will face even worse conditions if it rejects the plan now, wrote Dmytro Kuleba, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister.\n\nThe choice facing Ukraine is “to fight for at least some changes in the plan and then accept its final version” or “to continue resisting” in the hope that circumstances change and that more weapons and sanctions will eventually alter the balance, he noted.\n\nThe role of Europe
In preparation for the consultations in Geneva, Zelensky has once again turned to the support of European partners, plus Canada and Japan, who stated in a joint statement on Saturday that the plan needs adjustments.\n\nIn parallel to the protection that European leaders have already provided on several occasions to Zelensky in the face of pressure from Washington, which wants a response from Kyiv by next Thursday, Europe’s role in sustaining Ukrainian defense has also been growing.\n\nHowever, there is also frustration in Ukraine over what is perceived as the inability to make quick decisions in the European Union (EU), which fails to approve a loan funded with frozen Russian assets, even despite the fear of having to face Moscow alone if the U.S. withdraws and Ukraine falls under Russian control.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, expects greater support from his European partners and consensus within Ukraine at a time when he faces strong pressure from Washington to accept an unfavorable peace agreement with Russia.
