The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and SMEs (MICM) and the Dominican Accreditation Body (ODAC) officially presented the Cambita Avocado Cluster with the accreditation that validates the Designation of Origin \u201cOro Verde Cambita\u201d, a milestone for the province of San Crist\u00f3bal and for the national quality infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The accreditation, issued by ODAC under the NORDOM ISO\/IEC 17065:2012 standard, recognizes the cluster’s ability to certify products with international standards and supports the origin, authenticity, and traceability of avocados produced in Cambita Garabito. This advancement will allow producers to enter with greater competitiveness in demanding markets such as Europe, the United States, and Asia.<\/p>\n
With this accreditation, the country becomes the first Caribbean nation to have a Denomination of Origin backed by an internationally accredited certifying body.<\/p>\n
The delivery took place within the framework of Expo Constitution 2025, headed by President Luis Abinader, where Minister V\u00edctor -Ito- Bison\u00f3 highlighted the importance of this achievement for the province and for the country.<\/p>\n
“The accreditation of the Oro Verde Cambita Designation of Origin is a decisive step to strengthen the competitiveness of our producers. With this accreditation, Cambita’s avocado has the necessary technical support to compete with guarantees, traceability and international reputation,” affirmed Minister Bison\u00f3.<\/p>\n
The minister also emphasized that this accreditation marks a before and after for the Dominican quality system, by consolidating the national capacity to validate denominations of origin without depending on foreign organizations.<\/p>\n
“Today we demonstrate that the Dominican Republic has solid and productive institutions capable of accompanying our sectors on their path to global markets,” he added.<\/p>\n
Thanks to this accreditation, the certifications issued by the Cluster will have international validity, reducing the duplication of inspections, technical uncertainty and the risk of rejection of shipments, while increasing the commercial value of the Dominican product.<\/p>\n
ODAC: Technical sovereignty and a precedent for other Dominican products<\/p>\n
The Executive Director of ODAC, \u00c1ngel David Taveras Dif\u00f3, emphasized the institutional importance of the milestone, indicating that this accreditation strengthens the country’s capacity to validate products with designation of origin in accordance with international standards, without depending on foreign organizations.<\/p>\n
“With this accreditation, the country no longer depends on external organizations to validate the quality of its products. It is an institutional achievement that strengthens our technical sovereignty and opens opportunities for other areas that aspire to enter international markets,” indicated \u00c1ngel David Taveras Dif\u00f3.<\/p>\n
The accreditation includes product certification under model 1B (batch certification) and production surveillance through annual audits of the management system, as established by ISO\/IEC 17065.<\/p>\n
A feat built in alliance<\/p>\n
The process was accompanied by the MICM, the ODAC, the CODOCA and the technical support of the European Union, integrating as part of the Government’s effort to strengthen the productive chains and raise the quality standards of Dominican products.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the producers, the president of the Cambita Avocado Cluster, Mr. Jos\u00e9 Rosa, received the accreditation and offered his words at the event, indicating that this achievement represents a transcendental step for the sector, recalling that in the beginning it was thought that it was enough to register the designation for commercialization. He explained that the process required certifying the plots through an accredited organization, which motivated technical work of several years.<\/p>\n
He also expressed his gratitude to the president and the minister for the support provided to make this progress possible.<\/p>\n
Cambita Avocado: identity, origin, and quality with a scientific basis<\/p>\n
The accreditation of the Semil-34 avocado, produced in Cambita Garabito, is based on a set of agro-climatic characteristics specific to this territory, which directly influence the quality and differentiation of the fruit. This avocado is grown in areas between 300 and 800 meters above sea level, where the combination of altitude, humidity, and temperature generates optimal conditions for its development, determining its distinctive sensory profile.<\/p>\n
The fruit has a yellowish-green pulp, creamy texture, and a particularly low fiber level, qualities that position it favorably in specialized and gourmet markets.
