Geneva.-<\/strong> A Segovian centen from 1609, which was already the most expensive coin in numismatics Spanish<\/a> when it was auctioned in 2009 for 800,000 euros, tripled this price when it was sold again at auction this Monday for a final price of 2.4 million euros, which makes it one of the most valuable in Western Europe.<\/p>\n\n\nThe cent\u00e9n, a huge gold coin of one hundred escudos from the time of King Philip III (1578-1621), had a starting price of 2 million francs (2.1 million euros) and there were three bids for it that finally placed it at 2.3 million francs (2.4 million euros).\n\n\n

Read more: The King of Spain urges to join efforts to build a powerful science and technology system<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nThe coin was the star of the auction day organized by the firm Numismatica Genevensis at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva, and the record achieved was received with applause from the buyers and fans attending the sale.\n\nAccording to the firm that put this and other coins up for auction in Geneva, until now the most expensive coin in Western Europe was one of 100 ducats from 1629, minted in the Holy Roman Empire in the time of Emperor Ferdinand III and sold this same year for 1.95 million francs (2.11 million euros).\n\nIn the rest of Europe, there are several rare Russian coins that have surpassed those prices and worldwide the record is held by a 20-dollar piece minted in the United States in 1933, which reached a value of more than 18 million dollars (15.4 million euros) in 2021.\n\nThe Segovian cent\u00e9n, of which only the auctioned specimen is known, weighs 339.35 grams, making it the largest gold coin of the 17th century.\n\nThe coin belonged to the Caballero de Yndias collection, one of the best known in the Hispanic numismatic world, assembled by a collector of Basque origin who resided in Cuba and was auctioned in 2009 in Barcelona by the \u00c1ureo & Calico house.\n\nA Swiss buyer acquired it then, later it passed to another owner and this Monday it returned to auction along with four other outstanding coins minted in the Segovia mint, one of the most important royal coin houses of the 17th century.\n\nThe Segovian mint was created by Philip II, who, with the intercession of his cousin, Archduke Ferdinand II, managed to bring to the Castilian city engineers from what was then considered the best mint in Europe, in the Austrian Tyrol.\n\nThe cent\u00e9n, the culmination of the minting technology achieved in Segovia, was never intended to be used as a regular currency and was rather used by the Habsburgs as a diplomatic gift to showcase their prestige.\n\n\n
