Bogot\u00e1.-<\/strong> Colombian President Gustavo Petro questioned this Wednesday the fight against drug trafficking, which he said “is not won with missiles”, after the recent operations by the United States in the Caribbean and the Pacific in which ships allegedly loaded with drugs have been bombed.<\/p>\n

“Is firing missiles enough? Or is it enough for these people to progress lawfully? Missiles are not needed,” the president expressed at an event commemorating the nine years since the signing of the peace agreement between the Colombian State and the FARC.<\/p>\n

Last August, the United States launched a campaign against drug trafficking in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, later extended to the Pacific, in which it has bombed civilian boats allegedly linked to this criminal activity, attacks that have so far left more than 80 dead.<\/p>\n

Petro asserted that “firing missiles” ignores that the origin of the phenomenon lies in “poverty and state abandonment” of the territories where illicit crops are concentrated and that there is a “close correlation between coca leaf, poverty and exclusion”.<\/p>\n

“Areas such as southern Nari\u00f1o, the Pacific coast, Catatumbo or Putumayo are abandoned territories,” the president stated, after recalling that these regions combine illicit economies, violence and decades of institutional absence.<\/p>\n

Petro maintained that, after the “fall of the big cartels”, drug trafficking mutated towards the violent purchase of land as a mechanism for money laundering, which contributed to the massive displacement and stalled the agrarian reform “promised” in the peace agreement, which established the goal of delivering three million fertile hectares to peasants.<\/p>\n

“The lands must stop being unproductive in the hands of landowners who launder drug trafficking dollars and pass into the hands of peasants,” concluded the president.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
