You may be interested in: <\/strong>Peruvian Congress approves accusing Pedro Castillo of corruption<\/a><\/p>\n\n\nOn the day of the events, Castillo gave a message to the nation in which he ordered the temporary dissolution of Congress (Parliament), the intervention of the Judiciary, and governance by decree, following a new and imminent motion in the Legislature, dominated by the opposition, to remove him from office after evidence of alleged corruption that directly implicated him came to light.\n\nHowever, his pronouncement had no effect and within minutes he was arrested when he had left the Government Palace of Lima and was apparently heading to the Mexican Embassy, where his family did arrive and received asylum, while Castillo was hours later removed from office by Congress and sent to prison where he remains to this day.\n\nThe court acquitted Castillo of the crimes of abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public order, but imposed a disqualification from holding public office for two years, in addition to the payment of compensation of 12 million soles ($3.5 million) jointly with his co-defendants.\n\nThe same sentence of 11 years, 5 months and 15 days in prison fell on former Prime Minister Betssy Ch\u00e1vez, currently sheltered in the residence of the Mexican Embassy in Lima, and for whom the court ordered a new search and capture against her; and on former Interior Minister Willy Huerta.\n\nHowever, the sentence against Huerta will be suspended until the second instance in case of appeal and following a series of rules of conduct.\n\nMeanwhile, the former prime minister and head of Castillo’s advisors at the time of the events, An\u00edbal Torres, received a sentence of six years and eight months in prison, which the court did not apply for humanitarian reasons due to his advanced age (82 years).\n\nFor their part, former police chiefs Manuel Lozada and Justo Venero were acquitted of the charges.\n\nThe court issued this sentence a few days before the three years of pre-trial detention that had been ordered against Castillo expired when he was arrested on the same day of the events, so he should have been released if the ruling had not been announced beforehand.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
