Nicaraguan spouses and co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo sent their condolences this Thursday to their Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, for the fatalities following the fire that devastated seven buildings of a residential complex in Hong Kong, the worst disaster of its kind in the last three decades in this city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dear Brother President: Distressed by the loss of valuable lives in the fires that have taken place in Hong Kong, we send you our deepest solidarity, asking you to convey to the affected families the affection and prayers, ours, and those of the Nicaraguan families,&#8221; wrote Ortega and Murillo in a letter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We fully trust in the promptness with which these companions are attended to, and to you, your people, and all those who suffer this misfortune, our brotherhood, thoughts, and the sincere wish that normality will be restored, transcending the pain of the losses,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest figures released this Thursday by the Chinese emergency services, the victims of the fire rose to 83 dead, 76 injured (including eleven firefighters) and at least 279 missing.<\/p>\n<p>The fire, recorded on Wednesday afternoon, has devastated seven of the eight 31-story blocks that make up the Wang Fuk Court complex in the Tai Po district, and has become the worst urban fire in Hong Kong in three decades.<\/p>\n<p>The fire started in one of the buildings and spread extremely quickly, fueled by the bamboo scaffolding covered with safety nets, waterproof tarpaulins, and expanded polystyrene sheets used in the exterior renovation works that began in July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities consider the propagation speed to be &#8220;unusual&#8221; and have confirmed the presence of highly flammable expanded polystyrene materials within the blocks.<\/p>\n<p>The catastrophe far surpasses the death toll of the Garley commercial building fire in Kowloon in 1996, which left 41 dead and was, until now, the worst disaster of its kind in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Jos\u00e9.&#8211;
