The United States reported that forces from the Central Command (CENTCOM), in coordination with Syrian authorities, destroyed more than 15 weapons depots of the Islamic State (ISIS) in southern Syria during an operation carried out last week. According to the statement released this Sunday, the operation took place between November 24 and 27 in the province of Rif Dimashq.<\/p>\n
Combined units located and dismantled arsenals containing more than 130 mortars and rockets, assault rifles, machine guns, anti-tank mines, and materials associated with the manufacture of improvised explosive devices. During the search, illicit drugs were also found and destroyed, part of the clandestine economies that the group uses to finance its activities.<\/p>\n
Centcom described the operation as a step aimed at consolidating the advances made against the terrorist group and limiting its ability to reorganize. The statement included a statement from Admiral Brad Cooper, head of Central Command, who noted that the action helps prevent ISIS from rebuilding networks or projecting attacks outside the region.<\/p>\n
The operation is part of a pattern of actions aimed at neutralizing ISIS’s military, financial, and logistical infrastructure at various points in Syria. Although the group lost its territory in 2019 after the US-backed offensive in the east of the country, its cells remain active in desert and rural areas, where they maintain depots, smuggling routes, and training spaces.<\/p>\n
The persistence of these hotspots has led Washington to sustain selective operations with local partners to prevent the group from regaining influence. Since 2022, CENTCOM has carried out dozens of actions against operational commanders, bomb technicians, and logistics personnel, with the aim of limiting the capacity to plan and execute attacks.<\/p>\n
The United States has repeatedly warned that ISIS continues to seek opportunities to reorganize and has identified the central and southern strip of Syria as one of the spaces where its cells enjoy greater mobility. The mountainous areas and the territorial fragmentation resulting from the civil war make surveillance difficult and allow the existence of hidden deposits such as those located on this occasion.<\/p>\n
The announcement comes three months after another US operation in northern Syria, where a senior commander of the terrorist group was killed on August 19. According to CENTCOM’s description at the time, the ISIS leader played a relevant role in planning attacks in Syria and Iraq.<\/p>\n
Despite the loss of leadership and resources, Western security agencies believe that ISIS maintains a clandestine structure capable of sustaining low and medium-impact activities. Operations like the one carried out in Rif Dimashq seek to erode that base to hinder any attempt at operational expansion.<\/p>\n
The deployment in southern Syria underscores the continuity of the US strategy to disrupt insurgent networks in a region where the military situation remains fragmented and where multiple actors compete for influence.
