Santo Domingo.-<\/strong> The controversy generated by the cancellation of the three-game series between the Gigantes del Cibao and the \u00c1guilas Cibae\u00f1as in New York took a legal turn this month, after the company Latin Events, LLC filed a lawsuit to claim the return of US$775,000<\/strong> advanced to the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom), both teams and the National Federation of Professional Players (Fenapepro).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Payments Made<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nAccording to the sheriff’s act received by those involved, Latin Events disbursed:\n\n\n

  • US$275,000<\/strong> to the \u00c1guilas Cibae\u00f1as BBC, in two payments of US$137,500 (September 12th and October 16th).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • US$175,000<\/strong> to Lidom, in two payments of US$87,500.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • US$175,000<\/strong> to Skanuss Consoulting, a company that manages the Gigantes del Cibao.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • US$150,000<\/strong> to Fenapepro (October 7th).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Reasons for Cancellation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nIn its complaint, Latin Events argues that the scheduled series from November 7 to 9 at Citi Field \u2014 home of the New York Mets \u2014 was affected by “irresistible and unforeseeable circumstances<\/strong>” that caused ticket sales to plummet.\n\nAmong the cited factors include:\n\n\n

    • An increase in ICE immigration raids in New York City.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The holding of the Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic All-Star Game<\/em> a week later, in the same venue, organized by Fenapepro and with the participation of players from both teams, which the company calls \u201ccompetition\u201d and a violation of the principle of good faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\nThe plaintiff also accuses the teams and the league of maintaining an “inflexible reluctance”<\/strong> to renegotiate the contractual conditions, an action that, they maintain, constitutes an exercise of bad faith that caused them economic damages.\n\n\n

      Lidom’s Response<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nWhen consulted about the case, Vitelio Mej\u00eda<\/strong>, president of Lidom, stated that the league has also initiated legal proceedings against Latin Events for breach of contract.\n\n“They have initiated a lawsuit alleging fortuitous events that do not apply in this case. Lidom and the teams, for their part, are filing a lawsuit for substantial breach of contract, as the series was unilaterally canceled,” he declared.\n\nMej\u00eda assured that the contract clearly establishes the procedure for handling the funds received. He added that the matter will be handled exclusively in the judicial sphere and that it will be the league’s and the teams’ lawyers who will offer any public clarification from now on.\n\n\n

      A conflict that has been going on for years<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\nThe relationship between Latin Events and Lidom began in 2023 with a successful series between \u00c1guilas and Licey that brought together more than 90,000 fans in three days. However, in 2024 the event was reduced to a single game and was marked by mutual accusations of non-compliance.
