The Judiciary must act with a firm hand and without delay,” they added.\n\nParliamentarians also criticized the fact that the law called “Support for the Family through the promotion of the culture of chastity and the hijab”, approved by the Legislature last December, has not been enacted.\n\nThat law intended to impose severe penalties on women who do not wear the Islamic veil, at a time when the government of the reformist president, Masud Pezeshkian, had stopped cracking down on women who do not comply with this rule.\n\nFinally, the country’s Supreme National Security Council halted its implementation, after Pezeshkian warned that it would provoke “unnecessary conflicts” in the divided Iranian society.\n\nThe veil is at the center of a cultural and social battle in the country since the death, in September 2022, of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini while in police custody after being arrested for not wearing the hijab correctly.\n\nHer death sparked strong protests in Iran with the cry of “Woman, life, freedom” that lasted for months and that came to demand the end of the Islamic Republic, but which were harshly repressed, leaving about 500 dead.\n\nConservative politicians have denounced, in recent months, the lack of hijab use and female “exhibitionism” in the streets.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
