Santo Domingo.-<\/strong> The Haitian Government<\/strong> approved this Tuesday an electoral decree that will allow general elections to be held on August 30, 2026, in a country that has been without elected representatives for almost ten years due to the absence of elections within the legal deadlines, and which is going through a deep political and security crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The absolute priority is the imminent organization of the elections. All state resources will be mobilized to achieve this goal”<\/strong>, announced the prime minister’s office in a statement, announcing the adoption and subsequent publication of the draft electoral decree in the official journal ‘Le Moniteur’.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may be interested in:<\/strong> 153 undocumented Haitians arrested in Mao<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n“The path to the elections is irreversible, and the Government will continue to cooperate with all national institutions and partners to scrupulously respect the electoral calendar,”<\/strong> continues the government statement.\n\nThe first round of presidential and legislative elections in Haiti will be held on August 30, 2026, according to the electoral calendar presented last month by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) to the Presidential Transition Council (CPT)<\/strong>.\n\n\n

A second round should be held on December 6 of that same year, according to information from the CEP, which foresees that the country can have new authorities as of January 20, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\nAccording to the Government, the new step announced today “constitutes a clear signal directed to the nation and the international community”,<\/strong> which demonstrates that the Government and the Presidential Transition Council act “with responsibility, determination and commitment to guarantee the return to a fully democratic governance”.<\/strong>\n\nThe electoral decree project was examined “rigorously”<\/strong> and approved unanimously on Monday by the Council of Ministers.\n\nThe CPT, formed last year, had initially planned to hold elections in 2025 to provide the country with a president, senators, deputies, and mayors, as Haiti marked four years on February 7th without an elected government at the polls, amid a serious crisis marked by the deterioration of humanitarian and security conditions, and food insecurity.\n\nThe last elections held in the country took place between 2015 and 2016, during a transition period, which ended with the election of Jovenel Mo\u00efse, assassinated on July 7, 2020, five months after the High Judicial Council of Haiti ended his term.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
