Our welfare state will be financeable in the future, more effective and will take generational justice into account,” he added.

You can also read: The Pope will attend the Bubble concert for the poor: “Music is a form of love”

It is not clear, however, what the second part of the reform will consist of, for which a commission must make proposals during the next year.

The initiative was approved with 319 votes in favor, representing an absolute majority despite the dissenting voices, among which the one of the disputed Pascal Reddig stood out, who led the resistance of the young people.

“The content of this bill goes against my fundamental convictions, which is why I cannot vote in favor. I know that others, despite not being convinced either, will approve it to maintain coalition discipline, and I respect them,” said Reddig in a speech in the plenary.

The Young Union (YU) has 18 deputies who could have prevented the Government from obtaining an absolute majority, so the vote implied a political challenge for the coalition formed by conservatives and social democrats.

The main criticism of the JU had to do with a point that guarantees the stability of retirement levels at 48% of net salary until 2031 without determining how the cost of this measure will be financed, taking into account the demographic change.

However, the approval of the bill was considered certain after the Left party announced that it would abstain, arguing that the alternative was that the level of pensions would fall.

The announcement of the abstention by the Left was seized upon by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) to accuse Merz of allying with that party.

“We are facing a project that the CDU/CSU wants to approve with the support of the extreme left to please another left-wing party,” said the far-right MP, Ulrike Schielke-Ziesing, referring to the Social Democrats.

The point that guarantees the level of pensions until 2031 had been a commitment with the junior partner of the coalition, the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

During the debate, the conservative CDU/CSU bloc recalled other points of the project, especially the introduction of so-called active retirement. This will allow retirees who continue to work to earn up to 2,000 euros tax-free.

“This is the most innovative point of the legislative package with which a fundamental shift can begin. It encourages people to keep working and companies to keep important workers active,” said CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann during the debate.

Both the CDU/CSU and the SPD had emphasized the importance of passing the bill with their own majority, that is, with an absolute majority, and not depending on the abstention of The Left.

“It was also important for the good climate of the coalition because we have other projects ahead,” said the Minister of Labor and co-chair of the SPD, Bärbel Bas.

The next step will be the adoption of the bill in the Upper House on the 19th and, once the law is published, the creation of a commission that must make proposals for a long-term reform of the retirement system.

The lower house of the German Parliament (Bundestag) approved this Friday a bill that reforms some points of the country’s retirement system despite the resistance of the youth of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and its Bavarian sister, the Christian Social Union (CSU). “This is not the end of […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-493594","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-uncategorized
["Uncategorized
["GET
