So much so that in 2025, 1,421 fatalities and 106,590 injuries have been recorded, with a mortality rate of 12.9 people per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data from the Permanent Road Safety Observatory (OPSEVI) of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation INTRANT.

High speeds, lack of patience, poor road education, deterioration of the streets, and the scant consideration for human life have turned the main avenues of the country into authentic “bumper car tracks.” That reality explains why five provinces lead the death figures: Santo Domingo (204), Distrito Nacional (136), San Cristóbal (117), Puerto Plata (93), and La Altagracia (90).

Weekends represent the period of greatest risk: of the 1,421 deceased, 548 occurred between Friday and Sunday, equivalent to 38.6% of the total. Regarding specific days, Sunday is positioned as the deadliest with 366 deaths, followed by Friday (218), Monday (200), Saturday (182), Wednesday (165), Thursday (153) and Tuesday (137). Men top the list of fatalities with 83%, while women represent 10%. The young population —especially between 20 and 24 years old— registers the highest mortality with 131 deaths (10.8%).

You can also read: Monte Plata launches campaign due to traffic accident death figures

On the other hand, older adults show lower figures: between 50 and 54 years old, there were 14 deaths; between 55 and 59, ten; between 60 and 64, ten; between 65 and 69, seven; and those over 70 are also part of the statistics.

The hours of greatest risk are concentrated in the early morning and evening-night, with 9:00 p.m. being the most dangerous time. Motorcyclists The figures show that citizens who travel on motorcycles are the ones most involved in accidents.

Your vulnerability level is extreme: 53.3% of the deceased were motorcyclists. They are followed by: automobiles (11.3%), pedestrians (11.1%), cargo vehicles (6.4%), SUVs (3.9%), buses (3.0%), vans (2.5%) and bicycles (0.2%).

Oliver Martínez lost an arm and a leg

At 7:00 p.m. on March 10, 2016, a trip that Oliver Martínez, 26 years old, undertook towards San Cristóbal to rest after a long day, ended up becoming the worst experience of his life. While traveling on his motorcycle on the Sánchez highway, another motorcycle traveling at high speed and in the opposite lane hit him head-on. That recklessness triggered a tragedy that would mark him forever. His body was thrown and fell to the pavement completely beaten.

One of his arms received the biggest impact, while a leg suffered a serious fracture that later became complicated by a bacteria. After years of attempts to save it, the doctors made the painful decision to amputate it. Oliver remained a whole month in intensive care, fighting between life and death. Upon waking up from the coma, his mother told him what had happened.

Today, although he depends on a wheelchair and lacks limbs, he assures that he has plenty of reasons to live: his daughter Madisson, five months old, and his family.

Christmas and the significant increase in accidents

Christmas festivities are often associated with celebration, family sharing, and hope. However, for many Dominican families, Christmas turns gray due to the loss of a loved one in traffic accidents.
In December of last year, 227 people died from this cause. The record reveals that during Christmas and New Year of 2024, 15 accidents occurred, involving 12 motorcycles, two light vehicles, and one case of hit-and-run.

Citizen Perception

Through a survey conducted on Instagram, users attributed the high accident rates to citizen recklessness, lack of road education, cell phone use while driving, and the absence of a real regime of consequences. “Desperation and two-wheeled vehicles that go crazy,” said the young Engel José Díaz.

While Danilsy Sánchez expressed: “People always live recklessly as if time is on their side. Driving here stresses me out.” Faced with evidence of an unbalanced road system, an intervention is needed to address the weaknesses that endanger human life and claim thousands of lives each year.

Talks, preventive plans, massive road education, an effective consequences regime, strict laws, and the creation of citizen awareness would be key steps to transform this reality. So far, the Dominican Republic continues to be among the countries with the highest accident rate worldwide, an alert that must be analyzed urgently.

It is possible that evil will be cured

In accordance with all the details that evidence the national imbalance in transit, an intervention that puts on the table the weaknesses that put human life at risk, causes accidents at all levels and claims thousands of lives annually would be fair.

Talks, preventive plans, population road education, consequences regime, strict laws and the implementation of awareness, would be key points to change this reality that the nation is experiencing.

So far, the Dominican Republic has been recorded as one of the countries with the highest accident rate worldwide, thus raising an alert worthy of being analyzed mainly by the authorities and the entire citizenry.

Santo Domingo. – Traffic accidents involving trucks, cars, buses, tractor-trailers, motorcycles, pedestrians, and other vehicles occur daily in the Dominican Republic.
