United Nations – UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres,<\/strong> expressed this Saturday his “deep alarm” at the recent “escalation of tension in Venezuela”,<\/strong> which culminated in a US military action in the country and which, he warned, could have “worrying implications” for the region.<\/p>\n

Guterres underscored through his spokesperson, St\u00e9phane Dujarric,<\/strong> that recent events constitute “a dangerous precedent” for the international order and insisted on the need for “full respect, by all”, of international law, including the Charter of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned that the norms of international law have not been respected,” the spokesperson noted, without going into detail about the scope or circumstances of the US military action, nor about possible specific responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Guterres reiterated his call to all parties involved within the country to bet on a “political and peaceful” solution.<\/p>\n

“The Secretary-General urges all actors in Venezuela to engage in an inclusive dialogue, with full respect for human rights and the rule of law,” said Dujarric.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic sources consulted by EFE indicated that the UN is closely following the evolution of events and that the Security Council will meet urgently this afternoon to address the situation.<\/p>\n

For years, the organization has advocated for a negotiated solution to the Venezuelan crisis, supporting mediation and dialogue initiatives between the Government and the opposition, and repeatedly demanding respect for fundamental freedoms and democratic mechanisms.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump announced that the United States carried out this Saturday “successfully a large-scale attack against Venezuela” and said he had captured the Venezuelan president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, and taken them out of the country.<\/p>\n

Trump confirmed the attack a few hours after explosions and military aircraft overflights were reported in Caracas and other areas of the country.<\/p>\n
