These events have profoundly marked the institutional stability of their countries and, in some cases, have changed the course of history.

Kidnappings during coups

One of the most common scenarios has been the kidnapping of leaders during military coups. In 1973, the president of Chile, Salvador Allende, was surrounded by armed forces in the Palacio de La Moneda during the coup led by Augusto Pinochet. Although he was not formally kidnapped, he was held under threat until his death that same day.

In Honduras, in 2009, President Manuel Zelaya was captured by the military in the early morning and expelled from the country in his pajamas, an event that was described by a large part of the international community as a coup d’état.

You can also read:

Presidents kidnapped by armed groups

Some officials have been kidnapped by guerrillas or insurgent groups. In Colombia, several high-level officials were held by the FARC in the 1980s and 1990s. Although no sitting president was kidnapped, presidential candidates and ministers were, such as Ingrid Betancourt, whose case had worldwide repercussions.

In Lebanon, in 1988, then-Prime Minister Rashid Karami died after a bombing, reflecting the high level of risk for rulers in contexts of civil war.

Forced detentions and political arrests

In some cases, leaders have been arrested or detained by foreign or internal forces. In 1989, Panama’s president, Manuel Antonio Noriega, was captured by US troops during the invasion of the country.

More recently, in Myanmar (Burma), de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi was detained in 2021 by the military during a coup, remaining incommunicado and under house arrest.

Impact and consequences

The kidnapping or detention of heads of state often triggers institutional crises, mass protests, international sanctions, and, in many cases, long periods of political instability. These events highlight the fragility of democracies in contexts of polarization, violence, or authoritarianism.

A persistent phenomenon

Although less frequent nowadays, the kidnapping or forced overthrow of rulers remains a threat in regions with internal conflicts or weak institutions. The international community usually reacts with calls for respect for the constitutional order and the immediate release of the detained leaders.

Throughout contemporary history, several presidents, prime ministers, and heads of government have been victims of kidnappings, attempted abductions, or forced detentions, generally in contexts of political crises, coups d’état, armed conflicts, or terrorist actions.
