More than 11 million Portuguese are called to the polls<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lisbon.- <\/strong>Polling stations opened this Sunday for the presidential elections in Portugal to elect the successor to the head of state Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, after ten years in power.<\/p>\n\n\nA record number of candidates, a total of 11, are running, which many voters see as “too many”, to which is added the fact that 14 names appear on the ballots<\/strong>, because they were printed before the final candidates were officially declared.\n\nThe eleven candidates for the Presidency of Portugal<\/strong> are the far-right leader Andr\u00e9 Ventura<\/strong>; the former socialist prime minister Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 Seguro<\/strong>; the former Chief of Staff of the Navy Henrique Eduardo Passal\u00e1qua de Gouveia e Melo<\/strong>; the former social democrat leader Lu\u00eds Marques Mendes<\/strong>; and the liberal MEP Jo\u00e3o Pedro Matos Fernandes Cotrim de Figueiredo<\/strong>.\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\nCompleting the list are the former coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda Catarina Martins<\/strong>; the unionist Andr\u00e9 Pestana<\/strong>; the co-founder of the environmentalist party Livre Jorge Pinto<\/strong>; the leader of the Portuguese Communist Party Ant\u00f3nio Filipe<\/strong>; the painter Humberto Correia<\/strong>; and the musician Manuel Jo\u00e3o Vieira<\/strong>.\n\nThe election day is proceeding “without incidents”, EFE was told by the spokesman for the National Electoral Commission<\/strong>, Andr\u00e9 Wemans, who was optimistic about the turnout, which was 21.18% by midday, more than in 2021.\n\n\n
