Santo Domingo.- <\/strong>The elected president of Chile, the far-rightist Jos\u00e9 Antonio Kast<\/strong>, will visit this Sunday, along with the president of Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, <\/strong>the wall that the Caribbean country is building along its border with Haiti with the aim of controlling the traffic of migrants, drugs and weapons, as reported this Friday.<\/p>\n\n\nInformation sent by the Presidency to the media details that the Dominican Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fern\u00e1ndez Onofre, will make a presentation in Dajab\u00f3n (Dominican northwest) to Abinader and Kast “on the progress of the perimeter fence in the border area”.<\/strong>\n\n\n

You may be interested in:<\/strong> Jos\u00e9 Valenzuela, former mayor and former consul in Haiti, passes away<\/a><\/p>\n\n\nAlso, the Dominican chancellor, Roberto \u00c1lvarez, and other international guests will be present.\n\nThe Presidency, however, has not offered further details on Kast’s agenda in the Dominican Republic, a country he included in a tour of several nations, including El Salvador and Panama, where he will participate on Wednesday in the International Economic Forum Latin America and the Caribbean.\n\nThe construction of the fence or border wall began on February 20, 2021 in the province of Dajab\u00f3n and the first section was inaugurated in October 2023.\n\nPresident Abinader has defended this initiative under the argument that it will benefit both countries because it “will allow for a much more efficient control of bilateral trade, regulate migratory flows to thus combat the mafias that traffic in people, confront drug trafficking, the illegal sale of weapons and protect ranchers and agricultural producers from the theft of their livestock and crops”.\n\nFurthermore, with this wall, he affirms, the different forms of organized crime “that have wanted to use the border as a base” between the two nations that share the island of Hispaniola and a 400-kilometer border will be combated.\n\nThis is one of the measures adopted by Abinader to address irregular Haitian migration since he first came to the Presidency in August 2020.\n\nPrecisely the president-elect of Chile has promised a firm hand with migration, in the same vein as the United States, and mass expulsions of migrants.\n\nTension with the Haitian population has been increasing since October 2024, when the Dominican president, Luis Abinader, ordered a policy of mass deportations of migrants in an irregular situation.\n\nSince then, around 10,000 Haitian migrants are deported per week despite calls from international organizations not to carry out returns to a country where in the first half of 2025 more than 4,000 people died due to the violence of armed gangs.\n\nIn 2025, Dominican authorities deported 379,553 Haitians, a record number in the country.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
