These were flights suspended a year ago and triggered the first crisis between the Colombian Government and the new Trump administration, after Petro did not authorize the entry into the country of two planes coming from the US with deportees, alleging that because they were handcuffed, they were not receiving dignified treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n“A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves,” stated the Colombian president on X on January 26, 2025.\n\nTrump responded immediately by imposing 25% tariffs on Colombian products, while the State Department suspended public services in Bogot\u00e1 for a few days for visa issuance, but the crisis was contained with diplomatic efforts.\n\nAs part of the arrangement, Colombia assumed the repatriation of its citizens, for which it sent two planes to San Diego (California) and Houston (Texas) days later, but that operation did not continue due to several factors, including the high cost of each flight.\n\nAfter a year of differences over migration policy, the fight against drug trafficking, and U.S. intervention in Venezuela, which aggravated the crisis in the bilateral relationship, the two presidents held a phone call on January 7th in which a meeting at the White House on February 3rd was agreed upon, which is awaited with anticipation in Colombia.\n\nAccording to Petro, as he said last Tuesday, the meeting with Trump will be “determinant” for him, whose visa was canceled by the U.S. and who was included in the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list, known as the ‘Clinton List’.\n\n“It’s a key, fundamental, decisive meeting, not only of my personal life, but of the life of humanity,” the president said during an event at the Casa de Nari\u00f1o, presidential headquarters.\n\nThat same day, he asked Colombians residing in the United States, Chile, and Argentina to return to the country, assuring that in those nations they are treated “like slaves and dogs chased through the streets”.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
