Havana<\/strong>.- Cuba will face a “serious crisis” in six or eight weeks if it does not receive more oil or fuel,<\/strong> predicts for EFE the Cuban expert Jorge Pi\u00f1\u00f3n, specialist at the Energy Institute of the University of Texas<\/a>.<\/h3>\n\n\nThe analyst, dedicated to the energy situation in Cuba, assures that it is “very difficult to quantify” the breaking point of the country, after the U.S. announced this Thursday that it would impose sanctions on anyone who directly or indirectly sells or supplies oil to Cuba.\n\n“If in the next 6 to 8 weeks we don’t see any delivery of crude oil or fuels -coming from Venezuela, Mexico, Russia, the United States, or bought by Cuba with its own resources-, then they will face a serious crisis”<\/strong>, he assesses.\n\nPi\u00f1\u00f3n highlighted the “fundamental” role of diesel in this situation,<\/strong> because according to his calculations it represents around 20% of the fuel demand in Cuba.\n\n\n

You may be interested in:<\/strong> United States to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell oil to Cuba<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n“The impact would be catastrophic, as diesel is used for the transportation of passengers and goods,<\/strong> the railway, agriculture (tractors), industry and as fuel for the water distribution system, as well as distributed generation (generator sets),” he detailed.\n\nDistributed generation is the equipment spread throughout the country<\/strong> that, with diesel and also fuel oil, generates energy for the National Electric System (SEN). It is estimated that they are responsible for around 40% of the energy mix.\n\nThe fuel shortage in recent months – mainly due to the lack of foreign currency of the Cuban State to import it – was responsible for a large part of the blackouts suffered by the island<\/strong>, of more than 20 hours a day in large regions of the country.\n\n\n

Cuba needs around 110,000 barrels of oil per day,<\/strong> according to various estimates and in the absence of official data. Of this amount, around 40,000 come from its national crude production, with approximately two-thirds needing to be imported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its main historical supplier was Venezuela, which last year supplied it with about 27,000 barrels per day, <\/strong>according to the Reuters tracking system (much less than the up to 100,000 per day it used to provide). This ended with the capture of the president of that country, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, on January 3rd.<\/p>\n\n\nThen there was Mexico, with between 6,000 and 12,000 barrels per day last year<\/strong>, according to different sources that EFE cannot independently verify. Washington had been increasing its pressure on this country in recent weeks.\n\nRussia, for its part, sent about 6,000 barrels daily to Cuba last year,<\/strong> according to the University of Texas Energy Institute.\n\n\n
